Auckland based artist Tipare is proud to announce the release of her debut single Backbiters – out today.
Tipare’s world is one full of music, culture and politics, where history and its connections play a huge part.
Backbiters is a collaboration between Tipare and respected kiwi musician, Laughton Kora – Kora producing the track and Tipare supplying melody and lyrics. The result is a raw, soul baring track devoid of unnecessary embellishments that might dilute its powerful message.
It was the upheaval within her family from 'The Operation 8' terror raids that partly inspired Tipare’s new single, a song that showcases Tipare’s fierce nature, as she pokes the stick at the peddlers of judgment and gossip.
It’s no coincidence Tipare’s single release is aligned with Matariki. The Backbiters music video will premiere on Maori Television’s Ata Mārie Matariki 2014 show on Sunday June 29th.
The video was directed by Tipare and Toi Kai Rakau Iti. Based on a Maori whakatauki ‘He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngakau, kore e kitea’ meaning ‘you can see the corners of a house, but not the corners of the heart’, Tipare wanted to portray that you might see someone looking and behaving in a certain way, but you don’t actually know what’s going on inside them or the challenges they're facing.
Authentic to Tipare’s life and surroundings, everyone in the video is a family member, community member, or someone close to her.
