Lovable rogue EVAN DANDO & his band, those US indie rock legends THE LEMONHEADS should need little introduction. Since their formation in ‘86 they’ve spawned a generation of punk rock relics, college rock classics, band members & column inches, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen them on our shores… this December The Lemonheads will bring us new music mixed in with the old classics and it promises to be a special affair for long-term fans and newcomers alike.
The groups debut album Hate Your Friends was released in 1987 saw four young Boston lads emerge as one of the city’s premier bands, then 22 years ago the hit record It's A Shame About Ray propelled the band into 90s alternative stardom. The bands last new & original material The Lemonheads was released in 2006, and in 2009 we were treated to the covers album Varshons an electric mix of songs from GG Alin to Leonard Cohen. As of late Dando has been holed back up in the studio with the likes of founding member and early co-songwriter Ben Deily (rejoining the ranks for the first time since 1989) and ex-Lemonheads bassist Juliana Hatfield (well-known for her bountiful solo career).
The band are about to head off on tour with The Psychedelic Furs throughout the US and Canada this October and have just been announced to appear at the famed Meredith Music Festival in Australia in December, it is after this that we look forward to welcoming Evan and co back to New Zealand with these two intimate shows, tickets will sell fast.
Recent reviews report that seeing the band live, will take you back to a time of ripped jeans and youthful abandon, that Dando has got it now and forever, and as always it’s about those songs.
Joining Dando & Co in AUCKLAND are our own well loved alternative pop rockers Goodshirt, best known for the hit singles Sophie, Green, Buck It Up and Fiji Baby. Last year Goodshirt snuck back on the scene after an extended break, and in their true DIY style self produced and recorded the Skinny Mirror EP. With frontman Rodney Fisher well and truly back in New Zealand the band have a release poised with another video set for October.
