Even though 2001 started slowly, we had big albums in the second half of the year - Che Fu, The Feelers, Stellar*, Garageland, Anika Moa, King Kapisi and Salmonella Dub, all of which gave radio plenty of hits.
The good news is that for 2002, we won't be waiting until mid-year for the hits to come. Already the albums are lining up and there is something for all radio formats.
In the first six months, we will see Betchadupa, Tim Finn, Rubicon, Barry Saunders and Bic Runga. These are all projects which are boosted by Phase Four album funding.
K'Lee's debut album is coming, and Tadpole, Zed, King Kapisi, Strawpeople and Dave Dobbyn are all recording, again with Phase Four backing.
And then of course, there is the band formerly known as Shihad. As evidenced by Big Day Out and the 'secret' Valve warm up gig beforehand, Shihad is going to deliver a kick-ass fifth album this year.
RadioScope's first weekly local content moniter reported 14.41% kiwi music in the week starting 14 January. Rock Radio posted a whooping unprecedented 26.01% and Pop Radio has started the year with a very encouraging 12.18%.
The official APRA quarterly local content figure for the December 2001 quarter is due out any day now, and is shaping up to be another best-yet.
