Swoon to Death: Valentine's at Valhalla (Wellington)

10 February 2015 - 0 Comments

This coming Saturday, 14 Feb 2015, Wellington’s Valhalla plays host to a special Valentine’s Night of dark romanticism, with live music from emergent dark post -punk outfit Villain (Christchurch), swampy, noise-industrial dirges from Hog Haul Valentine (Auckland), angular, guitar-driven post-punk from No Why (Auckland), and local goth legends Disjecta Membra (Wellington). We also pay tribute to John Keats (1795-1821) and others, with performance poetry from Rosebud Garland, and visual projections from Izzy Joy.

ROSEBUD GARLAND and IZZY JOY

As an opening performance, Rosebud Garland will give a reading of Bright Star by John Keats, with audio-visual accompaniment.

In addition to designing the event’s promotional imagery, Izzy Joy will also provide visual projections during select performances.

DISJECTA MEMBRA

Together with Valhalla, these Wellington mainstays of ‘oldschool’ gothic rock are jointly playing host to Swoon to Death and our visiting bands. Disjecta Membra present a one-off performance devised especially for the event, with a set including musical adaptations from the works of Keats, original artwork projections from bassist Izzy Joy, and a tribute to Russia’s greatest love machine. The band now rarely play live; last year’s show at Valhalla supporting Masses from Melbourne was their first since joining Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy on his NZ Tour in 2013, and their next will be a guest performance with legendary Joy Division/New Order bassist Peter Hook & The Light. First on the line-up of live bands for the night, Disjecta Membra will play from 9.30 pm.

HOG HAUL VALENTINE

From Auckland, since the tail end of the last millennium, Hog Haul Valentine (H.H.V.) has been combining swampy, murderous folk and blues dirges with postindustrial and dark-ambient noise-scuplture. The result is a subterranean roar drawn up from the belly of taniwha lurking beneath Aotearoa’s primordial landscape, invoked with the sacrificial blood of its sanguinarian rural sector. Led by Jack Crawford, the semi-fictitious alter-ego of Paul Blanchard (formerly of Canis, Hieronymus Bosch et al), more recently H.H.V. has become a duo, with the addition of Andrew Wickham (Smoked Salmon is Better Than Sex, All Hell Breaks Loose). Blanchard is also a painter, sculptor and multimedia artist, whose set will also be accompanied by visual media projections. Hog Haul Valentine will perform live from 10.30 pm.

NO WHY

From the remains of dark, swooning post -punk-meets-shoegaze outfit 1995, Auckland’s No Why also share members with Sunken Seas, Mellow Grave, SinSin and Motocade; a pedigree that offers reasons enough for many to pay attention. Re-emerging as No Why in 2013, the group has adopted a grittier, stripped-back, angular approach to guitar -driven post-punk than their earlier project’s more densely layered shoegaze leanings, coinciding with Geordie McCallum’s transition from the role of replacement guitarist to the band’s new lead songwriter and frontman. Making their first foray into the nation’s capital , No Why are up third on the line-up of bands for the night, onstage from around 11.30 pm.

VILLAIN

Following the release of their self-titled début album in October, Christchurch band Villain play Wellington for the first time. One of New Zeal and’s most promising examples from the latest generation of ‘neo -post-punk’ bands, Villain’s style is comparable to Interpol, Sunken Seas, She Wants Revenge, Joy Division, Die! Die! Die! or Bailterspace, set apart by frontman Shaun McTague’s booming, resonant voice. Australia’s Bat Nouveau are ardent fans, as are San Francisco goth rockers Soulscape, while tracks from the new album have begun popping up in the playlists of post-punk, goth and deathrock DJs in London, Paris and California. The last act of the night, Villain are scheduled to take the stage at half -past-midnight.
