If Sub Pop have a record
store in Seattle, Captured
Tracks have one in Brooklyn, and Rough Trade and Beggars Banquet both
started as record store/labels in London, then
Flying Nun Records and
Arch Hill Recordings figured they might
as well have one too.
So we are pleased to announce the new Flying
Out Record Store. Opening in Auckland on Record Store Day - this
Saturday, April 18 from 9am.
Following on from the successful
Flying Out online store, established 18
months ago, opening a physical retail outlet seemed the logical next step.
Aside from Flying
Nun/Arch Hill titles the webstore stocks many other labels and
artists - in fact, Flying
Out even started it’s own imprint, producing vinyl and offering
label services to artists and labels we liked, including US partners Captured Tracks and
artists like Aldous
Harding, Bunnies
on Ponies, Little
Bark and others.
As Flying Out has grown, and vinyl becomes more popular, increasing numbers of people were
dropping into the office to pick up records, talk about music and generally
hang out. Now Flying Out will have a dedicated place for that.
“Our basic job in music is to help people discover the best stuff” says Flying
Out co-director Ben Howe,
“it could be a double gatefold vinyl LP from a store, via an internet streaming
platform, a song featured in a film or a band at a live show. Everyone finds
music in different ways. With everything under one roof we can now provide for
all of those options.”
"We are all music fans and community is an incredibly important part of
what we do. Having a physical space to compliment our online community will
help build this further," says Flying Out co-director Matthew Davis, "Plus
it will be fun, who doesn't like hanging at a record store."
The new Flying Out HQ is a three level building, with a large stock room/event
space basement, a shop on the ground level and the offices of Flying Nun Records, Arch Hill Recordingsand
Aeroplane Music Services upstairs. Between
the various companies they can offer everything from music supervision, to PR,
to label services, to distribution (local and international) and a record
store. Plus, "pay what you want" coffee from the shop.
The address located at 80
Pitt St, Newton, Auckland, New Zealand. For locals, that is
just off Krd - known for more than 30 years as The Shaver Shop. See you there!
