It’s February 1984… Nothing is on the airwaves except mainstream propaganda being transmitted repeatedly. Frustration is everywhere! Radio is dull, dull, dull…but wait!! An idea has materialised…. A beacon of hope, a bright flash of light in the darkness…and Radio One is born!
FAST FORWARD TWENTY YEARS…
It’s 2004… Everything is different. Thanks to Radio One 91FM we have had 20 years of intelligent radio, ever-fresh tunes, insane ideas, and an alternative to the mundane, the heartless and the creative wasteland that is all others. This Friday (20th February) Radio One is celebrating 20 years of sublime broadcasting.
Okay, everyone…gather round, story-time is about to begin… Radio One was the very first station to broadcast on the FM dial in Dunedin. Radio One was started by an enthusiastic bunch - they wanted to give a voice to music, news and views that were local, student oriented and free from political interference. In the early days Radio One broadcasted for only 85 hours a week, was transmitted from campus and only operated during the university term time. Oh, how times have changed! Radio One now broadcasts 24 hours a day every single day of the year. In the beginning everyone was volunteers, and now that we have charmed all and sundry with our wit, charisma and intelligence, we now have three full time and four part time staff.
Wanna know what sets us apart from the crowd? Radio One has, and always has had, a self imposed New Zealand Music quota of at least 30%. Our speciality? Radio One’s specialist shows. NZ Music, Reggae and Dub, Drum n Bass, Punk, Hip Hop, Rock, Downbeat, Metal, Breaks, Lounge…and the list goes on…and on….
All Radio One DJs, are volunteers, except our Brekkie host Justin, – they are our lifeblood! As for Justin – would you get up at 5am for free? No? Thought not!
Radio One’s latest step forward is Internet streaming – even more incentive to check out - ah, yes. Radio One has gone global!
Tune in to Radio One 91 FM all day Friday 20th of February to hear interviews with personalities from the past, live-to-airs from the vaults and your favourite tunes from 20 years ago. And you want prizes?? Thanks to Flying Nun, Arclife, and Governors Café, we have got booty galore!
