Hailing from Dunedin, New Zealand, surf-rock/pop duo Two Cartoons formed with the initial mindset to harness and channel the feel of summer and their continued love for bands like Best Coast, Wavves and The Drums.
Following the release of three critically acclaimed EP’s, earning four and five star ratings in NZ media, and support from the likes of Clash, The 405, and Record Of The Day here in the UK - the band are now preparing to unleash their debut full length album.
Lyrically, the new single Dreamsloosely talks about how singer Brad has dealt with always being the younger one in his group of friends, along with his belief that time is very precious. Speaking on the track he said: "Up until very recently I've always tried to act older than I am, and fit in with an older crowd. I guess what I was trying to say with ‘Dreams' is enjoy what you have right now and don't get too far ahead of yourself, but then again, don't dwell on the past."
This particular new track has been in the works for a while. First seeing the light of day in their live show a couple of years back, the original version had some real folk influence pushing through the cracks..."If I'd had my way it probably would have been a full blown indie folk tune” says Brad.
Since then, Dreams has developed and mutated into a lo-fi alternative indie pop masterpiece. Elements of folk can still be heard in the melodies and song construction, but Isaac’s driving drum patterns, and Brad’s phased guitar tone effortlessly join forces to create a sound that combines both hazy surf rock, with a clear alternative indie-pop backbone. The band have got a great sense humour, and this comes across in their music. There’s a real sense of ease around their songs, instantly likeable, whilst equally interesting, and lyrically impressive,
Focusing on simple, stone-age garage rock songwriting, mixed with catchy vocals and youthful exuberance, Two Cartoons revel in their live performances, taking their mix of high energy performances and comedic interplay wherever they can, from stages, to drunken house parties both in New Zealand, and in their new home - London.
In 2014, Two Cartoons signed to boutique label Far South Records (Dagny / The Chills) and moved to London, where they've opened for the likes of The Chills, Ball Park Music, and reunited with Courtney Barnett.
This is the first single to be heard from the band’s debut album, set for release later this year on Far South Records.
Two Cartoons are: Bradley Craig and Isaac McFarlane.
