New Zealand music is to get an extra boost on the eve of South By Southwest later this month after organisers offered to throw us a party in Austin, Texas.
The NZ function on the opening night of SxSW (Wednesday March 17) will follow the official international reception, allowing New Zealand artists and delegates to mix with guests from the international music industry, in Brush Square Park.
“The assistance of the SxSW organisation in the logistical side of this function has been invaluable,” says NZ Music Industry Commission CEO Cath Andersen.
“They have gone well beyond the call of duty in helping us organise this. It would not be able to happen without their help.”
The assistance stretches beyond the logistics. The conference organisers will be paying for the tent, staging, and lighting at the event - a clear indication of their enthusiasm, says Cath, as is their assistance in the invitation process.
“For a trade fair-based event, this is the best possible way to start a week of networking and making contacts,” she says.
“We’re excited about the opportunity presented to New Zealand artists and their affiliates by having key individuals at their event.”
Unfortunately, however, two of the biggest Kiwi acts booked to appear at SxSW have had to pull out at late notice.
Goodshirt have other international commitments, and in an odd twist, will miss the conference as they need to focus on supporting the Japanese release of Good - a deal struck on the basis of their trip to Texas last year.
The Mint Chicks are also disappointed to announce they are unable to play. The band have had to postpone intended UK dates, SxSW and Australian tour for personal reasons at a time when their UK debut single on the seminal Fierce Panda label is receiving national radio play and has just been made Single Of The Week in UK rock bible Kerrang!
