Indie singer and pianist, Nicole Andrews, has established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the Wellington music scene with the release of her debut album, In the Shallows , earlier this year. Next up for Nicole is an album release tour, with live performances in 10 cities across the North and South Island in October.
Often compared to alternative artists like PJ Harvey, Tori Amos and Massive Attack, the Portland Oregon born singer has spent the better part of the last decade in New Zealand, writing the music that would later become In the Shallows .
“I could have released a few albums in the time it took me to create this one, but it’s easy to get stuck trying to perfect something. I think at some point you’ve just got to let go and release it out into the world. I’m certainly not going to take this long for the next one.”
As a debut artist, Nicole has set the bar high for future works, having started her career working with some of the best in the New Zealand music industry. Her music has caught the attention of people like David Long (The Mutton Birds), Andrew Bain (Fur Patrol), Thomas Voyce (Rhombus), Reuben Bradley, and more; all of whom contributed to the album.
In addition to the impressive musicianship on the album, it has received a flood of support, including an arts grant from Creative New Zealand, and a highly successful crowdfunding campaign with Kickstarter, which brought in double the goal amount, and was completely funded with in just a few days; even receiving a virtual nod of support from fellow alternative pianist, Amanda Palmer, who posted about Nicole’s campaign on Twitter.
“As an independent artist you really need all the help you can get. I’ve received so much support for this project, and not just financial support. People have really gone out of their way to hold my hand through the whole process. The music community and my fans have really risen to give me the help I’ve needed.”

Quote:
“Nicole is not only a gifted songwriter with a most pleasant singing voice, but to be so instantly comparable so early to two important and iconic female performers [Tori Amos and Kate Bush] speaks for itself. Hopefully not one to fall under the radar. This lady is a bit special.” Ania Glowacz

“I don’t think any words I say will be able to convey how much this song got to me. You all just have to listen to it… Now please! [...] This is a stunning debut album. She has set the bar high for future projects, but you know what, I know she is going to keep creating superb works of art.” Ria Loveder
