Once again, New Zealand artists were a highlight at the infamous South By South West (SXSW) music convention, last week in the US.
Pluto, the Have, the Coolies, Neil Hannan, Little Thief and Meterman were amongst more than 1000 bands invited to showcase their music to over 20, 000delegates from around the world at the prestigious trade show and showcase convention in Austin, Texas.
The New Zealanders made a major impression with influential international music industry guests who attended the NZ music function, on opening night of SXSW. The Have and Pluto entertained representatives from BBC 1 and American college radio and record companies, concert promoters, managers and bookers.
“The NZ function was the best launching pad into SXSW for both bands and really started the buzz for them,” says the Have manager Teresa Patterson.
“It had such great industry attendance and people were really talking about NZ Music afterwards.”
Highlights -
The Coolies were interviewed for Austin’s local news channel and got a taste of Super stardom at their showcase with people lining up for photos and autographs.
The Have Showcase was well attended by international music industry (A&R people from Sony US, Interscope Geffen US, Fire Records, Matador Records, V2).
The Have were interviewed for E! Television and MTV’s Carson Daly invited them to be on is new NBC show based out of New York
Austin's C-VUE news broadcast live from the NZ Music function on for their 6PM news bulletin.
Ex – pat Zane Lowe did an interview for his Radio One show.
NZMIC’s Cath Andersen was on NBCS TV and WMBR Radio.
As well as playing their showcases at SXSW 04, the NZ bands participated in the trade show, where they made contacts and created business opportunities with the international music industry. For the second year running, the NZMIC supported the NZ delegation with promotional material and provided the NZ stand at the tradeshow.
