No matter which metric you use, The Feelers debut album Supersystem can only be described as a stone cold Kiwi classic. There’s a brash fearlessness to the way the trio of James Reid (vocals/guitar), Matt Thomas (bass) and Hamish Gee (drums) pushed up against genre boundaries.
From the electro-tinged ferocity of grunge-powered opener, Pressure Man, through to the rhythmically propulsive yet melancholic closer, Mary you’ll hear a roll call of hits that have earned themselves a place in the great Kiwi songbook. Pressure Man was radio’s most played rock song in ‘97, Space Cadet cracked the Top 10, while Supersystem won the APRA Most Performed Work award at the Silver Scrolls in ’98. But the album’s real juggernaut was Venus, a low-key, grungy power ballad that immediately resonated with fans throughout the country, taking home Most Performed Work at the Scrolls in ‘99 and haunting the charts for an astonishing 18 weeks.
Now, the album is being reissued. Thanks to a new re-master it sounds bigger and better than before. Releasing on October 30 the reissue of Supersystem will be available on CD and Digital formats and, for the first time ever, will also come out on Double LP Vinyl. All formats also include an additional four bonus tracks from The Feelers vaults.
“We’d wanted to do the reissue for a little while now,” says frontman James Reid. “As it’s now 20 years on from the original demos, it felt like it was the right time. I love the concept of Supersystem being on vinyl as well. I’m stoked about that.”
Unleashed in August ’98, Supersystem rushed the charts, debuting at number two before taking down the prized number one spot a week later. Remarkably it stuck around in the Top 10 for 28 weeks, sold 83,000+ copies and went 5 x platinum thanks to the continued release of cracking singles and an epic live show that continually won over new fans every time the band took the stage. It’s little wonder that Supersystem was awarded the highest honour of being 1999s Album of the Year at the New Zealand Music Awards
With the release of Supersystem in 1998 The Feelers’ live shows quickly became legendary, with their summer tours becoming an anticipated fixture on the calendars of their dedicated fan base. In honour of the reissue of this iconic classic, they’ll be hitting the road again to celebrate.
