Two years ago a New Zealand version of Top Of The Pops would have been impossible. There just weren't enough local songs in the charts. But this year it's now possible because artists like Scribe, Mareko, Bic Runga and Brooke Fraser, and bands like Elemeno P, Goodshirt, The Feelers, Zed and Adeaze, are holding their own in the charts against international acts.
Top Of The Pops starts on TV2 in April and is based on the highly successful UK TV show. A specialist studio has been built in central Auckland where the show will be shot each week in front of a live studio audience. It will feature live performances from local and international musicians, as well as interviews and a count down of the local singles chart.
"It's the first time this country has had the quality and the quantity of music to pull something like this off," says Top Of The Pops host Alex Behan.
"I fully believe that NZ bands are gonna outshine the internationals. I'm excited to see what bands are gonna do as well, I want to see bands bringing dances, a bit of an extravaganza, make a show of it you know, all the things Top Of The Pops is famous for."
"It's going to be very exciting, this is the first time I can remember that NZ bands have had the opportunity to play live on prime time telly, plus their going to be right next to international bands in the show."
Top Of The Pops is an institution in the UK after more than 40 years on screen - that's more than 2000 episodes - and it provides a unique live environment to see your favourite bands and musicians perform.
"Every week there'll be serveral performances from local artists, it will be a chance for the bigger bands to get their singles out there live as soon as they're released. Some times with lesser known bands or songs you don't really get into them til you've seen it live so it'll be a great opportunity for independents to get their songs out there."
