In a New Zealand first, one of Christchurch’s most popular cafes is converting part of its premises into a radio station to accommodate alternative radio station, RDU 98.5FM.
The studio will be complete and RDU 98.5FM, will begin broadcasting speciality music shows live from C1 Espresso from May 1st, coinciding with New Zealand Music Month. The studio will also include a stage for live music events.
Currently broadcasting from the University of Canterbury, RDU’s move into the central city will include a fresh format and a more interactive, urban feel to the station. Steve Bowden, station manager says, “I think it’s an exciting and inovative development. From RDU’s perspective it gives us a physical presence in the central city, a venue from which we can broadcast band and DJ performances live-to-air and the opportunity to involve a live audience in the broadcast.”
RDU 98.5FM has been on air for close to 30 years, and is part of b.net, New Zealand’s independent, alternative radio network. Other b.net members include Radio One in Dunedin, Radio Active in Wellington and 95bFM in Auckland. RDU’s playlist is a mix of indie pop and rock, electronica, house, dub, hip hop, and drum & bass, with 45% New Zealand music content.
A partnership with C1 Espresso, the café, and C4 Coffee, the coffee retailer, is a natural extension of this spirit. C1 is located on High Street in Central Christchurch near the Polytechnic and Jazz School, in an area known for its ecelctic mix of art, fashion, design and music stores. Always playing great sounds and displaying local artists’ work, C1 is renowned for its pioneering espresso and great food. C1 has a relaxed street style and welcoming atmosphere making it a perfect location for RDU’s specialty music shows and intimate gigs broadcast live-to-air.
To celebrate the official opening of the studio, C1 and RDU will host a VIP launch on Saturday 1st May headlined by local talent as heard on RDU. The party will be broadcast live-to-air as will a series of gigs and popular speciality shows throughout May, New Zealand Music Month.
