Auckland based Hip-hop funk soul outfit Kong Fooey have earned themselves a solid and loyal kiwi fan base with their tight musicianship, funk beats and high-energy crowd-pleasing performances.
Over the past couple of years the band has come to the fore with singles such as the 2013 Loop release Let Go, which amassed over 6,000 plays on Soundcloud, the hard-hitting frenetic groove of Be Like Water and their recently dropped old school funk track Right As Rain.
All of these steps in their journey have led to Final Destination – their debut full-length album, due out December 11th, in time for the NZ Summer and all the possibilities it holds.
“I’m a huge fan of old school funk acts like The Meters, The Commodores, Chuck Brown and Parliament,” says producer, Jason Peters. “Those influences find there way into all the tracks I make.”
All beats and music were written by Peters with some live guitar overdubs by David Haslett, who also contributes his soulful vocals on a few tracks. Peters invited several other collaborators to share their talents on the album including fellow Cantabrians Jamie Greenslade (aka Maitreya) and cousin Alice Egan (aka Topaz), plus Auckland vocalists Katerina Theo and Ella Rose.
Regarding making the album Jason says: “Most of the album was recorded in my home studio with the guys coming over and recording vocals when they can. Some vocals have been recorded remotely then shared online which makes everything so much more economical and allows more time for production. We’ve been working together on this project for over 2 years now. With Jamie residing in Europe 6 months of the year and everyone’s other music and work commitments, it feels really good to finally have all of these tracks in one cohesive album to showcase all of our hard work.”
The result is a collection of funky feel good songs with powerful and positive messages, sure to make everyone shake their moneymakers and have a good time.
Final Destination will be available from iTunes, Amplifier and all good digital outlets. Kong Fooey celebrate the album release at The Leigh Sawmill on December 11th where physical copies will be available for purchase. CD’s will also be available to buy online via Bandcamp.
