It's been over a decade now
and people are still talking about it.
The last time Gillian
Welch and Dave Rawlings toured New Zealand was November 2004
and they mesmerised audiences with performances that sent chills up the backs
of those in attendance. As one reviewer put it, they made “music with history, soul and a
human heart”, with Rawlings’ exceptional guitar work weaving in and
around the duo’s gorgeous harmonies.
After taking a few years off Welch and Rawlings released the Grammy-nominated The Harrow And The
Harvest in 2011 under Gillian Welch’s name while earlier
this year saw the release of The
Dave Rawlings Machine’s Nashville Obsolete their
seventh studio album together. Don’t let the title fool you, there’s
nothing obsolete about the timeless music these two make. In fact, the music onNashville Obsolete has been described as “a bold step forward” & “an album of surprises”.
Now, just months after accepting a Lifetime Songwriting Achievement Award from
the Americana Music Association in Nashville, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings bring
their show back to New Zealand featuring a set that’s likely to include
well-chosen covers by Bob Dylan, Bill Monroe, Ryan Adams and Woody Guthrie that
fit perfectly alongside their own beautifully crafted songs.
After years of anticipation, New Zealand and can look forward to seeing Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings perform again, this time in Auckland’s historic Civic Theatre.
Now, that’s something to talk about!
