2004 Music Awards Broadcast Across New Zealand

18 May 2004 - 0 Comments

Kiwi music fans will this year get the best ever broadcast coverage of their annual music awards with the announcement of a TV and radio deal with CanWest.

The 2004 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards – to be presented in Auckland on September 22 – will be broadcast during prime-time on free-to-air CanWest channel, C4.

In addition, there is to be comprehensive support from the CanWest stable of radio stations including Channel Z, The Edge, The Rock and More FM.

C4 is to broadcast a one-hour prime-time special with at least another four subsequent plays on C4 as well as a repeat on sister channel TV3.

C4 and Channel Z will also both broadcast recorded pre-show specials, popping the questions to VIP guests and celebrities as they arrive for the awards show at Auckland’s Aotea Centre.

Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards spokesperson Adam Holt is singing the praises of the partnership deal.

“This is simply great for music fans nation-wide. Everyone knows how popular and diverse Kiwi music is now – and we have had good news coverage in the past – but dedicated national television and radio support is fantastic.

“C4 is going really well, so everyone involved is thrilled we’re able to take our “new look” awards to the whole country.”

C4 programme director Andrew Szusterman says the partnership represents a great alignment.

“The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards are the industry’s key event for the year and we think C4 is an excellent place for them to be, given our music format. Frankly we can’t wait to get stuck in – last year’s event got rave reviews all round so we’ve got an exciting job ahead of us and we’re well ahead in the planning for it.”

Jana Rangooni, who is head of the CanWest music radio networks, says the stations will provide a truly national involvement ensuring coverage from Whangarei to Bluff.

“With the depth of New Zealand music and the unprecedented support of all our radio stations there’ll be something for everybody no matter what genre of music they prefer.

“We believe it’s important the awards are celebrated across the whole of New Zealand giving the musicians and producers the recognition they deserve nationally.”

The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards are being held later this year to better align eligibility dates and so winners and nominated artists can benefit from the lead up to Christmas, the industry’s peak selling period.

The 2004 awards are for material released between January 1, 2003 and May 31, 2004.

Key points of the partnership with CanWest are:

- One hour Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards special broadcast on C4 and repeated on TV3.

- Four subsequent replays on C4.

- Recorded pre-show special on C4 hosted by Jaquie Brown and Clarke Gayford.

- Up to 60 pre-event broadcasts on C4 and Channel Z of nominees in different categories; from August 25.

- A 60-minute C4 finalists special plus competitions and promotions on C4 and all radio networks.

- Radio broadcasts from backstage on the night of the Awards.
