Inspired by southern-gothic and western cinema references, this video follows the mysterious journey of a grave robber as he drags a coffin toward a brutal conclusion. Six months in the making, this video was crowdfunded in January where $6,040 was raised by fans worldwide to make it.
Produced by Auckland production agency Howl Creative, the video was written and Directed by Tom Levesque, including Alex Jenkins as Director of Photography and lead actor Steve Ciprian. With limited budget it was the ultimate collaboration of friends, family and supporters of Griffen who believed in the vision and rallied together to bring it to life.
Bernie Griffen, Kirsten Warner and the Thin Men appear in the video during brief performance pieces, while the narrative elements collide and juxtapose throughout. It was filmed across dry Hauraki Plains, through Auckland City and rural Warkworth.
This video is unique in its aesthetics and handling of the subject matter, bringing to life a bitter and vengeful story. It portrays the restorative inner journey of Bernie’s life and overcoming adversity.
Bernie Griffen is an Auckland-based folk musician and the host of 95bFM Border Radio. Griffen and Kirsten Warner are set to leave New Zealand early May to embark on a music tour across the UK and other parts of Europe.
The music video has just been launched the morning of Sunday 17 April - check it out here!
