Music News - Ata - A new te reo Maori release by Huia

Ata - A new te reo Maori release by Huia

10 May 2016 - 0 Comments

Āta haere, āta korero… the kaupapa of this EP is the ‘philosophy of ĀTA’, which means ‘with deliberation’ or ‘care’. This is Huia's first EP release and this time she collaborates with Baitercell and Te Omeka of House Of Shem Productions and gratefully supported by Te Māngai Paho.

ĀTA is a movement through all of Huia’s favourite genres. Starting with Reggae waiata - Kei Tua O Te Kite and Herekore, then we add an electronic dub feel with Oma and Tere Tuarangi. Finally, raise it up a level with Baitercell's Drum and Bass style for Awatea and Matakite.

This is Huia’s 2nd release since her debut album Huia’s Waiata and also on the award winning Tātou Tātou E collective releases. In full te reo Māori, Huia is on her reo haerenga with the tautoko of  Whāia = Lois McIver, translating and guiding her waiata.

You may have heard Huia’s sweet vocals at various festivals and intimate gigs such as: Splore, Coro Sonic Lab festival (as The Retro Poets), with Whāia and The Māhician, Sundaise (The Rogue Stage), Waiheke Jazz festival (with Kevin Mark Trail), The Big Day Out, R’n’V, The Red Lounge Sessions and at Auckland Museum. She has also worked with: Eruera Waaka, Kids of 88, Pieter T, Baitercell, Kevin Mark Trail, Sweet Mix Kids and more.

WAIATA.

Kei tua o te kite- Read Between the Lines.

Listen with care when people communicate with you. Some people talk straight but often you need to read between the lines to see the speakers true intention

HerekoreFreedom

Open your arms and feel freedom! The joys of no destiny, nothing watching you, don’t let society define who you want to be and what you want to express. Release creativity!

OmaRunning

‘You cant run away from yourself’ – Bob Marley. Be true to yourself, own your actions and your life. This waiata evokes the elements of te Pō, the stars, the sky and midnight poetry.

Tere TuarangiCosmic Drift

Appreciate Papatuanuku as we have no space ships to jump on and no planets to go to! This waiata is about humans ridiculous need to ‘go to space’ to solve the pollution issue, rather than address it now.

Awatea - Daylight

This is a song for my friends, who treasure my whānau and treat us with the aroha and respect that we always give to all in our lives. Whakawhanaungatanga. Manaakitanga. If you need us, we will be here for you, just reach out.

Matakite -  Oracle

Matakite is about hope. At times it feels like the world is against you. You feel like you are struggling with the universe, but the struggle is with yourself. This waiata reminds you to open yourself to abundance and become limitless.
