Good inventions can take time and perspective to come to fruition.
Started in 2010 and finished in 2016 you could say that this song has had time to brew. Quite fitting for a song about the perplexities and conundrums of time travel and the nature of regret.
Originally tracked with Storey’s live band at the time; a three piece line-up with guitar, harmonium, mandolin and 3 piece harmonies, The Invention seemed like a tune that would stand the test of time. For complicated reasons it took another 6 years to complete the song.
In early 2016 Dylan asked good friend and long time collaborator Cole Goodley to lay down some drums on the track. This was just the addition the song needed, bringing it to life and adding the rhythmic feel it had been lacking. Another friend and long time collaborator Simon Gooding completed the recording by using his freakish audio engineering skills to master the track.
The Invention is Dylan Storey’s first release since 2010.
With 3 albums and an EP under his belt, the intervening years have seen Dylan busy lending guitar and vocals to a wide range of commercial and artistic projects including: Bond Street Bridge band, Reb Fountain band, Wolves and Ravens, Rain Dogs, Landslide Show, Supatronic, as well as composing soundtracks through Huntaway Sound. Dylan has been continuing to write songs over this time as well. Many of these are currently filling up hard drives, one day to be released.
The Invention is a laid back melodic song featuring layered instrumentation and thick vocal harmonies.
