NZTrio is touring New Zealand
with an expanded 2016 programme of concerts, bringing their contemporary
revival of ensemble music to even more kiwis in Wellington, Christchurch, Kerikeri and Auckland.
Collaborations with some truly stellar artists such as operatic tenor Simon O’Neill and
guzheng player Xia Jingadd variety to NZTrio’s lively concerts throughout the spring months of
September through November.
Internationally renowned musician Xia
Jing brings a unique sound to the stage playing guzheng
(Chinese Zither) in NZTrio:
Fa 发 with Xia Jing in Wellington (Sep 16)
and their exotic loft series concert GLOW in Auckland (Sep 25
and 27). Hear the beautiful traditional instrument.
The award-winning musician accompanies the trio in Gao Ping’s new composition Feng Zheng (Kite) which is
dedicated to the late, great New Zealand composer Jack Body. The work is
inspired by the notion of sending thoughts and wishes into the sky- a perfect
way to celebrate the coinciding Harvest
Moon Festival (15-17 Sep.) The piece will premiere in
Wellington alongside three other new commissions for this unique instrumental
combination by New Zealanders Dylan Lardelli, Dorothy Ker, and Jeroen Speak.
Playing since the age of four, Xia Jing is an incredibly dedicated performer
who has been invited to perform alongside major orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic,
and the Beijing Symphony
Orchestra. The trio will reunite with Jing in Beijing later in
the year to give the Chinese premiere of this programme that merges Western and
Eastern culture as part of NZTrio’s 9th tour to China.
Jing will also share her talent further with an historical look with live
demonstration of guzheng for the public as Auckland Museum unlocks Asian
exhibits from its unique Castle Collection of ancient instruments unique
collection of traditional Asian instruments as part of a Cultural Exchange
programme of events on 17/18 September.
In a major highlight for NZTrio, acclaimed superstar tenor Simon O’Neill joins
them for FLARE heading to Kerikeri
(10 Nov), Auckland (13 Nov, 15 Nov) and Christchurch (17 Nov). FLARE sees the
musicians take on a wide selection of music for trio and tenor including a new
piece from kiwi composer Juliet Palmer along with greats Bach,
Mahler and Strauss.
Born in Ashburton, Helden-tenor O’Neill has managed to carve an impressive
career internationally – performing lead roles with the biggest companies in
the world. He is a principal artist with the Metropolitan Opera (New York), the
Royal Opera House (London), Teatro alla Scala (Milan) and both the Bayreuth and
Salzburg Festivals. Such incredible talent in the intimate venue spaces offer a
musical evening like no other..
Simon O'Neill's entry as
Otello resounded with robust force and he maintained a focused and energised
strength with flaming colour to the sound throughout the whole of this
demanding role.
- Sydney Morning Herald on Simon O’Neill’s role as Otello.
Already this year NZTrio has thrilled reviewers and audiences alike – kicking off their two-night Loft Series piece ZOOM in Auckland, and an Art3version of ZOOM amongst Francis Upritchard’s Jealous Saboteurs artworks at City Gallery Wellington on June 16th.
“Zoom…did just that for
a taut 70 minutes of music. An enthusiastic audience enjoyed stylish playing as
well as succinct and friendly spoken introductions to unfamiliar repertoire.”
– William Dart, NZ Herald
The trio are now in the midst of their July/August 10-centre national tour with
UK clarinettist Julian
Bliss, thanks to Chamber Music New Zealand. They are
performing two programmes of powerful and emotional music including the Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time,
written during WW2 to ecstatic reviews
