“There’s a buzzing in my head and it won't go away. I'm starting to think about genetics, what's passed on. What isn't. I'm thinking of my grandmother, Valerie.”
Last Tapes presents the Auckland Live International Cabaret Festival season of Valerie - an intergenerational, inter-disciplinary and interrupting piece of cabaret theatre that reaches into the guts of family mythologies and tries to catch a glimpse of the future. It explores the many perspectives that exist in one family’s story: the way they’ve been created, conspired upon, passed down, and received.
Valerie is the debut work from Robin Kelly (musical director for The Last Five Years, Earnest, The Events, Guys and Dolls, Night of the Queer), chanteuse Cherie Moore (Royals of Kihikihi, If I Only Had a Heart, Camino Real, Verbatim, The Last Five Years, Shortland Street), and Tom Broome, one of Auckland’s most sought-after drummer/producers and a heavyweight in the funk and soul scene (Hollie Smith, Sorceress, The Means, Home Brew). At the helm will be director Benjamin Henson - ever delightful, ever insightful, never frightful (The Tempest, This Is Our Youth, Not Psycho, Earnest, Titus, Camino Real, Punk Rock, The Turn Of The Screw).
For Last Tapes (The Last Five Years, Verbatim, Earnest, Fallout: The Sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, Love and Information) 2016 is the year of the newbie, with their Last Tapes: First Steps season championing first-time-rounders exclusively. After acclaimed productions of Defending the J.J. Mac and Mating in Captivity, and the launch of ‘Signs: A Deaf Scriptwriting Workshop Series’, Valerie marks the fourth time Last Tapes has showcased debut work by new writers this year.
Valerie is a standout local work among the Auckland International Cabaret Festival line-up. Don’t miss it.
