The 30 finalists have been announced for the inaugural 2004 Play It Strange National Secondary Schools Songwriting Competition. The judges; Brooke Fraser, Feleti Strickson-Pua, Jordan Luck and Phil Judd, took on the bold task of judging the 270 entries late last month.
It was “an honour to hear the new songsmiths at work”, said Luck. Strickson- Pua commented that, “…the depth of talent was over flowing” saying that judging the competition was “fun and exciting to be a part of.”
“With thirty awards up for grabs including musical equipment, recording studio time and the opportunity to be released on CD commercially, we new there would be many keen young participants”, said Programme General Manager, Debbie Little.
The Trust, set up by CEO Mike Chunn early this year, is confident they have tapped into an area that is being embraced by young songwriters. They feel they compliment other programmes such as the Coke Smokefree Rockquest, Schools Tours, The Stage Challenge and NZ Idol, sighting that young people want the opportunities, a platform to discover their musical abilities.
For Chunn, personally, "It has been a musical highlight of my life. Listening to the hundreds of extraordinary songs written by young New Zealanders shows just what is waiting in the wings. It is my firm belief that we are in for a period of original music in this country like we have never seen before."
A full list is of the top thirty finalists, in alphabetical order, is on the Play It Strange Website at http://www.playitstrange.co.nz/competition.php
"From the four corners of NZ, secondary school students have found great music in them, performed and recorded it and the best is about to be announced when Play It Strange hosts the inaugural Secondary Schools Songwriting Competition awards," says Chunn. The map illustrates representation from the whole country, “…we couldn’t have asked for more.”
All finalists will be announced on Saturday 2nd October at the 2004 Play It Strange National Secondary Schools Songwriting Competition award event at Baradene College’s auditorium in Remuera, Auckland. The Top 5 songs will be performed live by some of New Zealand’s premium artists at this event.
