Devin Townsend Project is returning to Australia
and New Zealand in 2017 and today, Aussie prog/post-rock/instrumental
sensations sleepmakeswaves are announcing that they will accompany HevyDevy on the entire May 2017
Australian/New Zealand tour.
Since recording and releasing their most epic record to date, ‘Love of
Cartography’, they've been back to the UK and Europe twice, China, South East
Asia, New Zealand, North America, and looped around Australia a bunch of
times and shared stages with some incredible bands – Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus, The Contortionist, Opeth, Monuments, Skyharbor and of
course a very special tour with the reunited COG.
Album 'Love Of Cartography' signalled their continued desire to map new
creative directions. Recorded with Nick
DiDia at Studios 301, the album's singles 'Something Like
Avalanches' & 'Great Northern' received airplay on triple j and across
Australian & international community & college radio. 'Love of
Cartography' was also nominated for an ARIA
Award, J
Award, AIR
Award and 3
AU Review Awards. Their Sydney iconic Metro Theatre
show was a memorable homecoming for the band and was recorded for posterity by triple j for Live at the Wireless.
Devin Townsend Project was last here in 2015 on a string of sold-out shows
in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne – this time Perth and Auckland (NZ) are
getting some HevyDevy love. The guitar virtuoso is one of the most celebrated
singer/songwriter/guitarists in heavy music and Devin Townsend
Project's live show never fails to satisfy and amaze.
The sleepmakeswaves bassist Alex Wilson exclaimed his excitement at the Devin Townsend Project
tour. "So glad to be
offered the opportunity to support Devin Townsend when he comes to Australia in
2017. It was a great surprise and honour to get the news while we're hunkered
down preparing our new album for next year. Really excited about the new music
and live shows ahead."
Over the course of Devin Townsend’s storied career, a single constant has
persevered: change. As far back as Steve Vai’s Sex & Religion, which
Townsend fronted, to 2001’s landmark full-length Terria to the
multi-instrumentalist’s country rock outfit Casualties of Cool to his
stunning new album Transcendence, the Canadian isn’t too interested in
keeping an even musical keel. To stay the proverbial course is, well,
anathema. For certain, he’s far too impatient to write the same Strapping
Young Lad song over and over—which is why he folded the band in 2007—and
it’s likely there will never be a fourth or fifth Ziltoid album (a third if
we’re lucky) because by that point he’ll be in a totally different frame
of mind for galactic puppets gone awry.
Townsend’s loyal fans haven’t been waiting very long for Devin to return,
only since 2015, but they will get the show of a lifetime with DTP playing the
new tracks and tracks from their extensive back catalogue, despite the project
only dating back to 2009.
