Musicians Moana Maniapoto and Paddy Free team up with filmmaker Toby Mills to create and debut MOANA-dub 800 km inside the Arctic Circle.
On Jan 27, MOANA-dub launch their electronica-haka-soul fusion at Skabmagovat, the “coolest film festival in the world.” This year, the Sami indigenous film festival in Inari (Finland) will focus the spotlight on Māori film. Moana (Inductee, NZ Music Hall of Fame 2016) and her partner Toby will also screen their seminal documentary “Guarding the Family Silver.” Her music video “Not Alone” (directed by son Kimiora Hikurangi Jackson) will the opening night of the festival.
“We came here years ago but as filmmakers,” said Moana. “I did sing one song in the amphitheatre – it’s about all I could manage. The whole thing is built entirely out of snow and it was sub-16. We have to play a 90-min show this time so lucky our gigs will be inside.”
While in Inari, the duo will record Sami superstar Mari Boine for their next album ONO. Mari was the first artist to incorporate Sami yoik into contemporary music and addresses issues of racism and colonisation in her lyrics. The two women met at Womad NZ and again at Riddu Riddu (Norway) when Moana & the Tribe played in 2013.
ONO will feature collaborations with six artists from six different nations. Thanks to Creative NZ for their contribution to ONO and Skabmagovat.
