After
releasing the "deeply moving"* music video Madness, selected
for a number of festivals including the Auckland
International Film Festival and LA Awareness fest,
NZ Alt-Pop artist Tom Lee-Richards is once again showing a completely
different side with his hypnotic track What Could Otherwise Be
Had.
Mixed by Tony
Espie (The Avalanches), the track marks Tom's debut as a solo
producer, completely re-inventing Madness, originally co-produced with Matt Neighbour (Courtney Barnett).
Capturing and building on Tom's live acapella looping What Could Otherwise Be Had has
an understated, mouth-percussion based swagger that also gives a nod to 70's
and 80's synth tones and assured D'Angelo famed
bass lines. Taking only some of the evocative lyrics and melody of Madness it
strikes out in bold new vocal directions that contrast with the dark nostalgic
synth elements.
What Could
Otherwise Be Had is out now on Spotify and Itunes among
other stores.
With his Debut
EP on the 2017 horizon, Tom Lee-Richards is
hinting at a magnetic, highly textured musical world to come.
