Delicately reflecting
an emotional intensity that is both gentle and captivating, musician/composer
Levi Patel’s debut single Since Last Letters, off his forthcoming album Affinity, is available
digitally from today.
Intricate textures and building layers help strike a balance between the deeply
melancholic and upliftingly hopeful, in a piece that also serves as the music
for the heartbreaking, mini-documentary Last Letters by Korean-based Director
Nils Clauss.
A project that commemorates the 304 lives lost in the MV Sewol Ferry Disaster,
the documentary is as a poignant reminder of the empty spaces the victims left
behind – showing the deep sense of loss from that day, and how those feelings
still reverberate. It is available to view here.
Levi explains how Since Last Letters aims to capture the depth of some of
these emotions, striking a balance between the deeply melancholic and the
beautiful.
“Putting the music in that context brings the melancholic emotions to the
forefront but there are also hints of happiness when some of the families
remember fond moments with the people they have lost, even if it is utterly
heartbreaking overall,” said Levi.
Also working with Nils Clauss on the official music
video, the Since Last Letters visuals give insight into yet
another world. Exploring the Leh district in the Indian Himalayan Region,
the piece reflects a day in the bustling high-desert city – and features
beautiful and telling profile and landscape shots.
“Places like Leh are often represented internationally in a very limited way,
and I feel the small amount we do see have been distorted through our own
foreign lenses. It was important to us to work with locals featured to create a
more authentic insight, and to give a glimpse into what their lives look like –
their routines, culture, customs, struggles and laughter.”
Levi has also previously released two solo records to glowing reception,
alongside collaborative EP 5/8 with electronic artist, Suren Unka. Since
Last Letters is the first single off Levi’s debut full-length album, Affinity, set for
release through Marigold Music on 7 April, 2017. The single is available for purchase and streaming from today, with the video is available to view here.
