The Christchurch Package crew, finding themselves in the middle of a wealth of creative energy, and being big fans of everything that’s happening, thought they’d try something new and produce a compilation of Christchurch tunes.
The primary aim of this CD is to capture the artistic excellence of Christchurch musicians, when selecting the tracks we were careful to represent the enormous diversity of top-quality music being produced in this city. The final result may be one of the most eclectic disks ever released in this country, but it’s not just a matter of eclecticism for it’s own sake – every track on this CD has earned its place and we’ve sequenced the tracks to give the disk remarkable continuity over its length.
Fine Tuned is distributed by Rhythmethod and will be available in the shops from next week.
Heres a bit about the tracks
1. Clowndog : Ambulance
Kicking things off with a thwack and a roar are three-piece Clowndog, with a storming 100kW stop-start punkstrumental in the vein of Fugazi. They do have a singer, he’s just keeping his mouth shut on this track.
2. degrees K : Click
One of the city’s most interesting new bands, degrees K are deserving of the term "emo," but avoid the overblown pretentiousness that is sometimes associated with that term. Instead, "Click" is a tight, edgy and moving performance of a unconventionally structured but completely catchy song.
3. Slim : Switched Right Off
Third in the opening salvo of tight, hi-energy punky tracks are Slim, masters of buzzsaw guitars, assured pophooks and phat rocknroll grooves. "Switched Right Off" is yet another irresistible cut from their recent Wildside album, Drive Thru an album that’s getting a phenomenal response throughout the country.
4. met service : Escape from the Pig Islands
With this track from met service (aka Chris Tait), the CD moves into indie lo-fi territory, summoning the classic era of NZ guitar music. Tait delivers his subtle, wry lyrics with a sardonic drawl while the music chugs along at a slightly off-kilter lilt. Guaranteed to grow on you with each listen.
5. 103 : Mayo Thompson Records The Chills
Speaking of the classic era of NZ indie bands, how about a reverb-drenched tribute to the The Chills, telling the story of the recording of their first album, "Brave Words"? The members of 103 all have varying degrees of Flying Nun pedigree, and include Richard James, formerly of Mainly Spaniards. Now that’s old skool…
6. Hi-Tone Destroyers : (Deep Inside) Teenage Pussy
Apologies for the dodgy title, but it’s all part of the deal, right? Sounding like an outrageous outtake from Raw Power, the Hitones take sleazy 60s/70s rawknroll fetishism to a new level with a completely genius wahwah-soaked riff, a brilliantly shambolic performance, and throatshredding vocals from Matt Alien.
7. Pine : Days on End
Sounding wonderfully innocent and wide-eyed compared to the Hitones, the gorgeous Pine offer up a track from their upcoming debut album. "Days on End" features all the classic Pine hallmarks: a delicate shuffling rhythm, plaintive and slightly britpoppy vocals, close harmonies and a wonderful touch of organ at the close.
8. Barnard's Star : (terrabytes, terrawatts) and terra incognita
Electronic experimentalists, Barnard’s Star create an intimately industrial soundscape (if that’s not too much of a contradiction) where mysterious ethereal vocals float over abstract lowend rumbles and scrapes. Computer sequenced, but with a delicate guitar-loop holding it all together, the track forms an nice bridge between the preceding rock tracks and the electronica to come.
9. Confucius and Dubwize Soundsystem : Contemplation Dub
Picking up the pace a notch, Christchurch’s resident irie dancehall kings, Dubwize Soundsystem, drop some heavyweight dubbed-out beats. Points to be noted: beautiful flute and organ work, crystalline production, and a great big rolling bassline - keep an eye out for their upcoming album with vocals from MC Little Jah.
10. O.G. : Lotus
Taken from O.G.’s soon-to-be released EP of jungle jazz, Jaded, "Lotus" is a fantastic blend of live jazz performance with ambient/intelligent jungle-inspired breaks from the rhythm section. Look out for some cool tabla and sitar sounds and a beautiful eastern-influenced sax solo towards the end.
11. Rockwood : Kung Fu Philosophy (Conga Mix)
House is one genre which has really come of age in the last couple of years in Aotearoa, with world-class releases from Soane and House of Downtown, among others. Here Rockwood delivers a taste of his own handclappin’ bootyshakin’ funk styles, with a heavy bassline and plenty of percussion. Check the original, available on 12" thru Christchurch’s newest dance label, Pinacolada.
