Ben Salter Backs Himself Through Aotearoa this September

09 August 2017 - 0 Comments

Acclaimed Australian songwriter and performer Ben Salter is returning to Aotearoa in September (his third trip in 18 months) to promote his third solo album Back Yourself, due for release on September 1, 2017.

Recorded in Salter’s new home of Tasmania over the past 12 months, it is another eclectic collection of songs ranging from acoustic ballads to prog-metal work outs. Salter will be touring across both islands performing songs from the album plus his extensive back catalogue. His unique brand of esoteric existential antipodean indie-folk, coupled with his remarkable voice, make for an unforgettable live experience.

BEN SALTER & BACK YOURSELF:  A PRIMER

- Back Yourself is Ben Salter’s third solo album, following 2011’s The Cat and 2015’s The Stars My Destination. It is his second album to be released through ABC Music, due for release on September 4, 2017.

- Key tracks: Isolationism, The First Sign of Madness, Back Yourself, End Of Days.

- The album was made over a 12 month period, predominantly with producer Chris Townend (Augie March, Tim Finn, Die! Die! Die!, Portishead, Daniel Johns) at his White Light studio, located on the edge of Tasmania’s Huon Valley.

Back Yourself features guest appearances by well known Australian guitarist and songwriter Jeff Lang, Peter “Blackie” Black of underground legends The Hard-Ons, and Something for Kate drummer Clint Hyndman.

- Melbourne-based jazz saxophone virtuoso Julien Wilson and his Bee for Chicken Quartet act as the backing band on two tracks, The First Sign Of Madness and I Need You. Wilson has played on all three of Salter’s albums.

- Opening track Where Corals Lie is an interpretation of a piece by English classical composer Edward Elgar, which was itself an adaptation of a poem by minor English poet Richard Garnett.  It was originally performed in 1899.

- Final track End Of Days was written in Lyttelton with Marlon Williams on Salter’s last NZ tour in February this year, whilst Isolationism was written with long time Gin Club collaborator Conor Macdonald.

Back Yourself continues some of Salter’s long held thematic preoccupations - love, dreams, armageddon, video games; the ocean and the stars; the intersection of myth and science; and the nature of reality itself.
