Community Radio Hamilton on FM

The NZ On Air-funded community access radio station serving the Waikato, Community Radio Hamilton, has begun broadcasting to Hamilton city on the FM band on 106.8MHz, in addition to its wider AM transmission on 1206kHz.

The station has increased its programme diversity markedly in the past year, with a number of Waikato’s minority ethnic communities and other community groups taking advantage of the opportunity to make and broadcast their own programmes. The addition of FM broadcasting sees the
station better able to serve a wider audience.

Easter Radio Special

Funding was approved at NZ On Air’s February meeting to contribute to the production costs of a special Easter radio programme, to be broadcast on the Newstalk ZB and Radio Sport networks throughout New Zealand between 6am and 6pm on Good Friday.

Produced by the Christian Broadcasting Association, the Easter Special will include a number of high-profile presenters, and consist of talkback, programme features, lots of New Zealand music, and a team travelling the country trying to give away Easter eggs. Look and listen out for them.

NZ Music On NZ Radio

The local music content figures for the 2004 calendar year have now been released and another record has been set.

New Zealand music content on commercial radio for the full 2004 year was 18.57% - the best annual figure since records began. The 18.57% tops the 2003 result of 17.75% and the 2002 result of 15.01%. The 2004 year was the third year since the NZ Music Code began and the third year in a row that radio has beaten its annual Code target for the year by 2% or more.

The 2004 target was 16%. Our thanks to all our friends and allies in commercial radio and in the record companies for their contribution to this result. And, of course, our thanks to the artists who make the great music, without whom.

Feeding And Growing

NZ On Air has just announced funding for another three projects under the Phase Four Album funding scheme – new albums by Dimmer, Concord Dawn and punk debutants, The Bleeders.

Under the Phase Four plan, NZ On Air can provide up to $50,000 to match $50,000 (or more) from a record company to make and/or market a new album by a band that has got a track-record of producing radio hits.

The Bleeders are a great example of Phase Four in action. Their debut singles 'All That Glitters' and 'So Lonely' were funded through the new artist discovery part of the plan. Both songs went on to become radio hits, peaking at #28 and #15 respectively on the RadioScope NZ Airplay Chart and earning the band the opportunity to compete for album funding.

Both Dimmer and Concord Dawn have strong alt-radio roots but both have crossed songs over to commercial radio, which provides NZ On Air with something to build on in the campaign to not just feed, but also grow, the appetite for New Zealand music at commercial radio.

Why has funding for a video been granted to a band that recently signed to a huge multinational corporation for an NZ record breaking financial figure? Not to mention the heinz style ad publishing whores Goldenhorse.. and a message for Dave Dobbyn, if at this stage in your career you are still finding it necessary to apply for government funding schemes don't you tink its time to give up!

I totally agree. How come the bands who don't and shouldn't need funding are always the names we see in the listing time and time again. What about all the great upcoming bands with brilliant new music sounds that desperately need the funding are never chosen. Come on NZ On Air, why not start a separate category and help these struggling new bands.
