Hon Jim Anderton, Minister for Economic Development, has today announced a welcome boost in investment for the growth of New Zealand music. The NZ Music Industry Commission (NZMIC) and NZ On Air are each to receive funding to implement new domestic and international programmes.
“The Board of the NZ Music Industry Commission is very pleased that the Government has made the decision to support new economic development initiatives for the Music sector.” said Richard Thorne, Chairperson of the NZMIC. “The economic potential of our industry was shown in the Music Industry Export Development Group (MIEDG) proposal ‘Creating Heat’, and we warmly welcome this funding which will allow us to act on some of the report’s key recommendations.”
“We envisage developing an export support programme based largely on the ‘Creating Heat’ model. NZMIC will look to the expertise of the MIEDG, and of course the wider industry, in refining the programme in light of this funding.”
The NZMIC has been granted an additional annual funding of $178,000 (excluding GST) for the next four years to further enhance its domestic activities. $444,000 (excluding GST) will be funded for three years to implement a music-specific market development grants programme, aimed at growth of the foreign exchange earnings from the Music sector.
NZMIC CEO Cath Andersen said, “Although there is still work to be done in the areas of policy and criteria surrounding this additional funding, we are excited about the opportunities this investment presents for the growth of New Zealand music internationally. We are very much looking forward to implementing a range initiatives over the next financial year.”
“The NZMIC will also be working closely with NZ On Air to ensure that our new international market development strategies and NZ On Air’s new offshore marketing funding complement each other for the best possible results.”
