What To Give was split into two parts to ease the recording process and achieve an abrupt change in tempo.
Drums were retracked in an acoustically dark and expansive space called the Tutti Room at The Old Library - Whangarei. Bass guitar parts were retracked direct input at Morepork Studio. Lead vocals were retracked in the Tutti Room. Keyboard and electric guitar parts were retracked direct input at The Percy Street Playhouse and then reamped in the Tutti Room. Baby grand piano was tracked in the Tutti Room. Stereo arrays of microphones were set up to capture the ambience of the Tutti Room, in addition to close microphones. Finally, upright piano and backing vocal parts were tracked at The Percy Street Playhouse
Blue Funk: An upbeat depression song that conveys the frustration of knowing you’re on your way down but being powerless to pull yourself out of it. Instead, you let go and get swept away by the darkness and the disconnection from the rest of the world. The contrast between the lyrics and the music reflects the contrast between how you feel and how you present yourself to the world.
Lyrics here. What to Give: That moment when you see some person with a clipboard down the street and you know they’re gonna ask you for money. Their questions leave you feeling totally exposed and unable to say no. Simlarly, when you’re online and a website asks you to sign up, you’re a bit unsure about how much info to give out, but doesn’t everyone else do it? Do you use your real details? Argh! The pressure!
