Following on from the release of Sal Valentine’s latest single, Cherry Blossom, an energetic and catchy pop-infused and fun-loving track, comes the equally charming Maxine. With a grooving disco beat, yacht-funk groove, and vocals like caramel, Maxine is the sort of track you can imagine yourself sashaying across a room to, deftly making sure not to drip whisky on the shag-pile carpet.
Despite the feel-good nature of the track, Sal Valentine (Ivan Luketina-Johnston), wrote the song as a tongue-in-cheek social commentary on his surroundings.
“It was around two years ago that I had the very fruitful revelation that I didn't have to wallow in my own bullshit for a few seconds and in fact I could totally wallow in someone else's.
Maxine is a song about a detrimental clash of lifestyles, good intentions gone horribly wrong and culpability. Sorry if y'all was expecting a super bright follow up to Cherry Blossom, but I'm slowly realising that I'm surrounded by gripping narratives, and this one was too good to pass up.
Names have been changed out of respect for everyone involved” - Sal Valentine
Sal Valentine, a self-professed “idiot jazz child/indie-funk style icon”, has been creating music for a number of years, earning a place as one of New Zealand’s most beloved live acts at festivals and headline shows across the country. His album,This Party Blows, is due for release this October.
