One of New Zealand’s most acclaimed songwriters returns to releasing music, but in a new way. Feeling strangled by music industry release norms of premieres, deadlines and embargoes on his music, Lawrence Arabia (James Milne) decided to take a step closer to his fans, sending them his new music as he makes it.
Milne described the
difference in process to the NZ Herald recently stating, "This is totally different to a
normal record. Normally you're thinking of songs in the context of a whole
record. Now I'm thinking of them as singles. Every month I go, 'what am I going
to do to make this song as awesome as possible?'. I'm not thinking about a
whole record. I'm just thinking, 'I've got to get this song finished and I've
got fairly minimal time'."
Lawrence Arabia has made it to the halfway mark by delivery single no.6. Introducing Cecily, "a light escapist
relief from the relentless daily newsreel of horrors". The song features Alistair Deverick (Boycrush) on
drums. The rest is all Lawrence Arabia – it's a slice of 60's psychedelic pop
infused with that wry offbeat Lawrence Arabia humour.
