The bNet NZ Music Awards were established as an alternative to industry awards ceremonies, and to reinforce the ongoing commitment of bNet stations to breaking and developing new talent by recognising those artists not yet acknowledged in the mainstream.
The first bNet Awards were held by 95bFM in 1998 - the only industry Awards at the time to be decided by public vote; this year’s campaign generated a huge response from listeners, who voted on 60 nominees across 20 categories.
This year The Mint Chicks followed on from last year’s success at the bNets, taking home awards for Best Rock Release and Best Cover Art for their Anti Tiger EP plus Best Video for Opium of the People. Trinity Roots were another favourite on the night winning Best Downbeat Release and Best Album for their LP Home, Land and Sea and also picking up the prize for Best Live Act.
The Checks were voted last year’s Most Promising New Act. This time round they proved why with their single ‘Mercedes Children’ receiving the award for most bNet radio play (and why they are on the prestigious NME tour this month!). The Sneaks received Most Promising New Act - let’s see what they are up to this time next year… maybe Glastonbury?
Flying Nun: Second Season took home Best DVD, and Loop Select 006: Kono CD won the vote for Best Compilation. And if we are going to get genre specific. Best Hip Hop Release went to P-Money for Magic City, Best Electronic Release went to Minuit for their Guns EP and Fly My Pretties – Live at Bats won Best Pop Release.
Radio is all about a good song and a great band name. So to celebrate this Best Song went to Pluto for Dance Stamina and Best Unreleased Song was awarded to Phoenix Foundation for Hitchcock (since the voting period it has been released on their LP Pegasus). Meanwhile Shihad were recognised as the Biggest Cock Up for changing their name to Pacifier, but don’t worry Most Memorable Moment was awarded to Pacifier for calling themselves Shihad.
The Brunettes picked up the prestigious International Achievement and Shayne Carter was awarded the equally coveted Lifetime Achievement. Whilst Mu (Fat Freddys Drop) could be described as one of the most talented musicians in the country, he took home Most Outstanding Musician and Best Producer.
AND last but not least… Dallas Tamaira and Heather Mansfield were recognised as NZs top vocalists, whilst Shayne Carter and Kirsten Morelle were crowned New Zealand’s foxiest musicians.
