Base FM, with the help of Creative Communities NZ, is proud to host a series of youth dance workshops this October and November with award-winning Ugandan dancer and choreographer Antonio Bukhar.
In these free workshops, youth in communities across Auckland will be given the opportunity to learn and perform dancehall, hip-hop, Afro-fusion and Ugandan dance with the internationally acclaimed Antonio Bukhar. The workshops will culminate in two live public showcases in which of all the performers work will be on display in our Neighbourhood of Kingsland Village and the main stage of Grey Lynn Park Festival.
Antonio is an award-winning performer, choreographer, and teacher from Kampala, Uganda. He has a rich artistic practice that operates with a blend of urban dance styles with traditional Ugandan movements, earning him international acclaim. He directs art collectives such as Kuenda Productions (a trans-global artists exchange platform) and Arts 2 Hearts, whose mission is to promote art as a valued form of expression in schools and communities. Among others, he co-founded the dance company Tabu Flo, renowned by CNN African Voices and The Economist Magazine. He was awarded the “Pina Bausch Fellowship” at the University of Auckland in 2017.
“This project excites me because it's an open ending,” says Bukhar. “The participants play a part in shaping the direction of the flow, therefore, I look forward to seeing which kind of youth it draws and how we connect to create a positive impact for all. The cooking process is the most vital to ensure dope results end up on the table. Can’t wait!”

Open to youth from all communities, this is a great opportunity for people to learn new dance styles, connect with others and to be part of something special. Dance experience is not a requirement, only passion and energy! Everyone is welcome.
