Music News - This Week on Coast

This Week on Coast
Greg Johnson

27 June 2005 - 0 Comments

We have a fantastic line-up on the show this week with appearances by some of NZ’s premier performers - check it out!

WHIRIMAKO BLACK
KURA HUNA, the latest album from one of Aotearoa’s finest Maori artists Whirimako Black, is receiving brilliant reviews, being described as ‘sublime’, possessing a ‘stark beauty’ and as ‘an evocative album of engaging beauty and emotional depth’. The album received a 5-star review in the NZ Herald, and we’re extremely proud to be able to showcase her reo ataahua (‘beautiful voice’) on our show this week. Whirimako will be performing with Russel Walder, the extraordinarily talented musician, oboe player and composer who worked on KURA HUNA.

GREG JOHNSON
A Los Angeles resident since February 2002, songwriter-extraordinaire Greg Johnson is visiting home for a few months and we’ve managed to nab him for COAST. Since relocating State-side Greg has been wooing the Americans with the style and warmth NZ has come to know and love, and he’s been hard at work recording and playing live. He has produced some of this country’s best pop classics: including 'Talk of this Town, 'Don't Wait Another Day', 'Isabelle' and the APRA winner “Liberty”. His latest album (the first to be produced in the U.S) ‘Here Comes The Caviar’ was released earlier this year.

BILLY TK JNR
Guitar Player of The Year nominee (Guitar Association of NZ) Billy TK Jnr pulled off two major concert coups earlier this year when he won the coveted support slots for both American blues hero George Thorogood and the Neville Brothers during their recent NZ tours. Billy kicked off 2005 with a blast co-headlining a massive New Year’s show at Aotea Square with Adeaze, Tadpole and Goodshirt, and touring all summer with Autozamm and No Artificial Flavors, and his new single SEE YOUR SMILE is doing great things at radio stations all around Aotearoa – check him out this Thursday!

LYRICAL OFFICIALS
The Lyrical Officials formed in April 2004 at Tauranga Boys College, growing from their passion for hip-hop/r’n’b. The 3 boys – Here, Goldie and Quadrie (aged 15, 15 and 14 respectively)– write all their own music and are just starting to make in-roads into the local scene. They will be performing two songs, one of which will be their first single release, ‘That Special Girl’.

FRANGIPANI PERFUME
Frangipani Perfume is a powerful and sensual black comedy about three Samoan sisters who have left their childhood home amid the blossoms of frangipani to work as cleaners in NZ. Trapped in a life of drudgery and looking after their elderly father, the sisters escape from the stench of the toilets they are scrubbing to memories of paradise and the sweeter scent of frangipani and coconut oil. The play, written by Makerita Urale and directed by Hori Ahipene, runs for 3 nights only next week at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau. We’ll be interviewing Makerita on the show this week, and will be showcasing one of the dances from the play as well as giving away tickets!

And that’s not all!
There’s also field stories on the BUSHWHACKERS (yup, of WWF fame – we tracked ‘em down!), we visited BARNABY WEIR & the FLY MY PRETTIES crew up in Leigh over the weekend so you can see the results of that, plus a brief chat with the winning NZ MAORIS team.

All this and much much more!
COAST – NZ’s only live music show!
