Melbourne's Sex On Toast Announce 8-Date NZ Tour

17 September 2018 - 0 Comments

Melbourne’s dynamic six-piece 80’s funk outfit Sex On Toast are proud to unveil their latest EP, Rough, accompanied by an 8-date New Zealand tour.

Their hard-edged, new-jack swing, blazing improvisation and blue-eyed soul have made them a favourite across Australia, and their choreographed stage act, bursting with complex arrangements, performative larrikinism and danceability make this one act you don’t want to miss.

The first single from Rough, 4 U, is a desperate slow jam, bringing some heat to the bite of Melbourne’s winter chill. Brought to life by Nima Nabili Rad, with a late 1989 film trailer style music video, featuring set and costume design paying homage to New Edition, Silk and Prince’s Graffiti Bridge.

A few months later, Rough’s second and final single, Party, was unleashed. Already a live performance favourite, Sex On Toast’s summer banger brought piercing snares, munchkin voices, a 1990’s style guitar shred and orchestral hits into a visual universe of choreography and bathtub antics, thanks to director Jesse Gohier Fleet.

Despite obvious nods to Zappa, Prince, and Teena Marie, Sex On Toast’s music has an unrelenting theme of stepping outside of expectations, conventions and comfort zones, and instead pursuing the unexpected whilst staying true to the originality, charm and raw talent that has taken the group from strength to strength.

Recorded at Tonay Studios and self-produced by the eternally entrancing frontman Angus Leslie, Rough is an offering that not only holds its own against current Australian acts, but is a testament to the underrated Melbourne genre.

"One of Melbourne's most nichely-beloved bands, the soul-funk-pop-R&B outfit have been responsible for enduring goers for years now. Songs that really hit the spot—the spot you sometimes forget about that Luther Vandross used to fill, and now all you've got is Bruno Mars and sometimes the 1975 (if that Matty Healy would yell a little less)” - Noisey/Vice

"How to explain Sex on Toast? Is it a condiment? A dodgy carnal practice? Or one of Melbourne's freshest bands? The answer is C” - Sydney Morning Herald.
