Has it really been a whole month since NZ Music Month 2005 wrapped up? With so much great local music to take in it hardly feels like it, but one month down the track the NZMIC is pleased to present a round-up of results for the fifth NZ Music Month.
In total New Zealanders bought 55,000+ albums by local artists in May this year - nearly twice as many than in the previous month, and 5000 more than during NZ Music Month 2004.
In the opening week of NZ Music Month, local artists held the #1 positions on every major chart - Savage with the #1 Single, Fat Freddy's Drop with the #1 Album, Breaks Co-Op with the #1 Airplay and Hayley Westenra with the #1 DVD.
28.71% of total album sales were by New Zealand artists, and 20.04% of total singles sold. The proportion of local albums in the Top 20 reached 35% in the last two weekly charts of the month. And also during NZ Music Month 10 local albums or DVDs went gold or platinum.
The average local content across all NZ radio for the month of May was 22.79%.
All told, these are fitting results for the fifth anniversary of NZ Music Month. Thanks to all this year’s supporters, now we can look ahead to next year and how to top the biggest launch of NZ Music Month we’ve ever had…
