The young bands sound is mature beyond their years. Radio friendly music with a standard high enough to impress the most seasoned musicians, means they occupy a realm somewhere between Indie Pop and Jazz.
Their self-titled debut release sees two tracks, Clown and Scatter Brain, provide the listener with a rounded introduction to the band. All highly skilled and professionally trained musicians, the quality immediately oozes out of the speakers as they effortlessly glide somewhere between pop sweethearts and jazz old heads. With influences such as the likes of BadBadNotGood, Tame Impala, Flying Lotus and more. It is no wonder the band exudes such musicality and composure.
Having recently performed at Basque the band’s live show is a stellar part of their repertoire. With a three date tour in the pipeline, there will be ample opportunity to see them in the flesh. Art School consist of bassist Calvin Corner, drummer Hakopa Larsen, guitarist and back up vocalist Te Paerata Tichbon, keyboardist Reuben Topzand and lead vocalist Jesse Stratford. Although the vocals will be what captures your ears immediately, the interplay of the backing instruments provides the vehicle to transport you to euphoria.
“Just what happens when you combine the haunting melodic invention of Jeff Buckley with the jazz sensibilities of Jose James and a splash of Six60 epic-ness” - Nigel Patterson, The Black Seeds.
“Clown is mixed with a broad range of influences. I love the interplay between piano and guitar. The arrangement of rise, falls and momentum provides a necessary space. The performances of every instrument is near perfection.” - Solomon Crook, Musician.
“The instrumentation plays extremely well with the lyrics. The tonal range of the lead vocalist is dynamic... Clown transforms from a stripped back interlude into a cohesive, full sounding track. The guitar licks are perfectly timed.” - Charles Clatworthy, Coastal Promotions.
