A bubbly and rousing summer anthem, On The Run showcases Kennedy’s powerful and distinctive voice and delivers an underlying message of courage and strength, inspired by her own personal journey.
Although this is Kennedy’s first solo single, she’s no stranger to success after featuring on the 2017 song Taking Me Home with rising Dutch producers Joey Dale and Anthony Dircson. The song received critical acclaim on EDM blogs around the world and piqued interest in the Kiwi vocalist.
A true songwriter at heart, whose sound isn’t confined by genre, Kennedy places a strong emphasis on music with meaning. “I write what I feel and that’s often raw and real lyrics,” she explains. “On The Run is about realising that we do have choices, and there really is nothing stopping you from doing what you want to do.”
Born in Kaitaia, and descending from Te Aupōuri and Ngāti Porou, Kennedy Ihaka’s journey has taken her from full-time university studies to working in the studio alongside some of New Zealand’s most well-known musicians and producers, including Sam Eriwata and Matt Sadgrove from the band, Sons of Zion.
The 22-year-old has music in the blood. Her grandmother was one of the sisters in the 1960's trio the Harrison Triplets, who worked alongside Miss New Zealand 1962, Maureen Kingi, and the Kiwi pop trio Bill and Boyd.
With her unique style and sound, matched with poignant lyrics and catchy beats, Kennedy’s music stands out loud and clear against a backdrop of ‘here-today-gone-tomorrow’ tunes and provides a glimpse of what’s still to come from the emerging young artist.
