Judging was completed yesterday for New Zealand's most prestigious music award - the 2005 APRA Silver Scroll Award.
This year’s five finalists for the highly coveted APRA Silver Scroll award will be announced at a function in Auckland this Friday 19 August.
The APRA Silver Scroll Award, presented since 1965, is New Zealand’s pre-eminent song writing award, recognising simple creative excellence. Judges consider only the creative distinction of the song, assessing both the musical and lyrical content in equal proportion. The commercial success of the song is irrelevant.
In the decades since its inception, many noted writers such as Bic Runga, Neil Finn, King Kapisi, Dave Dobbyn, Shona Laing, Hammond Gamble, Don McGlashan, Greg Johnson and the songwriters of Nesian Mystic have received the award – some in the early stages of their careers.
Finalists for the SOUNZ Contemporary Award recognising excellence in the field of contemporary classical music, and the APRA Maioha Award, recognising the best contemporary Maori waiata, will also be announced.
The line-up of finalists will be celebrated at the prestigious APRA Silver Scroll Awards evening at the Auckland Town Hall September 12.
