The self-penned Let You Down is a bold and cleverly-crafted blast of indie-pop.
“Let You Down is an abstract representation of my feelings on a failed relationship,” says 19-year-old Sophie. “I feel like it represents the way I write about things - metaphorically and without focusing on musical conventions, rather basing the sound on instinct and passion,” she adds.
Alongside the other songs on Sophie’s upcoming debut album, Let You Down was recorded in Lyttelton with the legendary Ben Edwards, who is one of the country’s most sought-after producers, thanks to his work with the likes of Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Delaney Davidson and Tami Neilson.
“It was a pretty amazing experience. I was so absorbed in the music for those weeks and Ben is just incredible. All the songs are solely written by me, and I’ve always had such strong notions of what I imagine for instrumentation, but Ben was able to provide a bit of influence - something I don’t get often as a (slightly reclusive) solo writer. We were able to create a record, which this song is the first single from, that I feel super proud of and am excited to share,” says Sophie.
Let You Down, which Sophie wrote on the floor in her bedroom at 3am, is a significant milestone for the singer-songwriter from Auckland, New Zealand.
“It’s really special to me because it’s the first single I’ve commercially released. Because it was the first time I’d really put myself forward as an artist, I spent a lot of time considering the kind of sound I wanted to create and the introduction I wanted to give people into my music.”
Sophie is undoubtedly one of the most evocative new artists on the New Zealand indie scene. Her sound is steeped in folk, but also shines with a unique and refreshing blend of indie pop.
She will follow up the release of Let You Down supporting the renowned Californian musician Donavon Frankenreiter, who kicks off his NZ tour in Wellington at San Fran on Tuesday, November 27. See dates below.
“I was so thrilled when I got the invitation because I think he’s an incredible artist and someone I’ve been influenced by. I also love traveling so I’m really grateful I get to do several of his shows. I love exploring this beautiful country!”
