NZ music legends Jonathan Crayford and father Terry to play a repertoire of music on two concert grand pianos

10 February 2019 - 0 Comments

Following on from their 2010 CD release, father and son duo Terry and Jonathan Crayford will perform over two nights a repertoire of arrangements with two concert grand pianos. Ragtime, swing and some of their originals populate this very lively and energetic programme from the pair.

This unique event is taking place in Wellington from 8th-9th March 2019 at Prefab Hall, 14 Jessie Street, Te Aro in Wellington. Doors open 7pm for 7.30 start. Tickets available through Under The Radar.

Terry Crayford is a New Zealand jazz legend who began his career in 1951. As both pianist and bass player, he has toured and recorded with high profile New Zealand and overseas jazz stars.

By the late 50's Terry’s band was playing regularly on Friday and Saturday nights at The Pines Cabaret with Slim Dorward (bass), Bob Little (drums) and Eric Foley (alto sax) from 9pm to 3am for 5 pounds ($10) a night. During the night he would also feature on a honky tonk piano, playing hit tunes of the day such as My Heart is an Open Book, Waterloo, Battle of New Orleans and Pink Shoelaces.

Terry has undertaken nationwide tours with shows and famous artists including Barbara Windsor, Reg Varney and The Seekers and Bruno Lawrence. Terry has also accompanied singer songwriter Randy Newman, UK sax player Ronny Scott, jazz trumpeter Wild Bill Davidson, American sax player Scott Hamilton and Count Basie’s vocalist, Jimmy Witherspoon.

Son Jonathan Crayford is an award winning pianist, multi-instrumentalist and critically-acclaimed composer from New Zealand. As a musician in New York he has worked with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Binney, Mambo Macoco, Groove Collective and in Europe with David Murray, Tony Allen, Questlove, Macy Gray, Bobby Carcasses (Cuba) and many others internationally. As a film composer he has scored numerous feature films, winning industry awards. His latest trio of albums gained critical acclaim with East West Moon receiving the 2017 Tui Award for Best Jazz album.

Most recently he undertook a commission from the International Festival of the Arts to reinterpret some of the works of Mahler, Samuel Barber, Ravel, Albinoni, Satie for piano, flute and strings. He also toured New Zealand playing a wide variety of musical genres with an historic Steinway Grand Piano – to bring the music to people who might otherwise miss out on a truly magical piano experience. Jonathan has also written arrangements for Hollie Smith and Nathan Haines; undertaken solo concerts in Europe and arranged the music for the Weta Digital Xmas party.
