Other NZ On Air News:

National Radio on FM

Radio New Zealand continues to increase the number of centres where its flagship network, National Radio, can be heard on the FM band. In recent weeks three more FM transmitters have been switched on, so National Radio listeners in Whakatane, Kaikohe and Kaitaia can now tune in on 101 MHz.

These additions mean that 85% of New Zealand’s population can receive National Radio on FM, and it is predicted that by the end of this year, that figure will reach 90% as Wanganui, Wairarapa, Gisborne, Ashburton, Queenstown and Wanaka come on stream.

Phase Four Turned Five

On 28 July 2000, NZ On Air launched its Phase Four New Zealand music plan. Phase Four is the adopted name for a collection of funding schemes and promotion strategies developed to help get more New Zealand music played on commercial radio.

On 28 July 2005, we marked the fifth anniversary of the Phase Four plan at a function at Toto’s Montecristo Room in Auckland with the Prime Minister in attendance plus Hon Judith Tizard, Phase Four New Recording Artist Sarah Brown, Phase Four Album band, Elemeno P and special guest, Akon (who is about as close to an honorary Kiwi music star as you can get while still coming from Senegal, West Africa via Atlanta, Georgia!)

Taking Over The Ditch

Just as New Zealand music stars Scribe and Evermore have finished polishing their platinum plaques for 70,000+ album sales in Australia along comes a second wave of Kiwis to assault the Australian airwaves and sales charts.

As we go to print, the second single from Fast Crew – It’s The Incredible – is sitting at #42 (with a bullet) on the Australian charts and the group’s (Phase Four-funded) album has been proclaimed Album Of The Week by influential radio trade magazine The Music Network.

And Savage’s first single, Swing, is at #33 on the Australian singles charts and climbing.

Just wait until those Australians hear Savage and Akon doing Moonshine!

No Smoking

The annual high school battle of the bands, the smokefreerockquest, is over for another year and a Takapuna Grammar band has taken out the top honours.

The winner this year is a band called The Electric Confectionaires. The band receives a dream prize package consisting of $15,000 worth of gear from the NZ Rockshop, recording time courtesy of York Street and NZ On Air, airtime on The Edge network, an NZ On Air music video, a place on Kiwi Hit Disc, a feature in our Fresh NZ Music magazine and the full weight of NZ On Air’s plugger team to help create a radio hit.

The rockquest has been a feature of the New Zealand music calendar since 1988. Many New Zealand music stars have come through the rockquest – Bic Runga, Anika Moa, Nesian Mystik, The Have, Evermore, The Datsuns, and many more.
