BIG DAY OUT is more than a little chuffed to announce the return of THE WHITE STRIPES. Since their last BDO visit in 2002, our old friends Jack and Meg have dropped two universally acclaimed albums, 'Elephant' and this year’s 'Get Behind Me Satan', not to mention an era-defining single in the shape of 'Seven Nation Army'. They are the rock icons of our time, topping charts worldwide and selling a quarter of a million albums in Australia alone. Their simple, two-person, guitar and drums line-up belies a huge blues/garage/country/folk/rock’n’roll cacophony. There is no mistaking and no resisting the sound of THE WHITE STRIPES, direct from Detroit to BIG DAY OUT.
BIG DAY OUT is rolling out the red carpet to herald the arrival of rock royalty – IGGY & THE STOOGES. 'Search And Destroy', 'I Wanna Be Your Dog', 'No Fun', 'Down On The Street' – THE STOOGES’ dangerous and grimy ‘60s-‘70s catalogue was the blueprint for every punk rock, garage rock and metal band to come. After 30 years apart, THE STOOGES reformed in 2003 to contribute to Iggy’s album “Skull Ring” and to play a string of rapturously received shows. Now it’s Australia’s turn, but be warned, this ain’t no nostalgia trip – this is the iconic IGGY POP and the original underground sound of THE STOOGES. We’re not worthy!
When they sang “take me out”, the world lined up to take FRANZ FERDINAND up on their offer. BIG DAY OUT is thrilled to have the Scots with the mostest along for the ride. Universally acclaimed as the album of 2004, FRANZ FERDINAND’s self-titled debut has now been topped by the brand new 'You Could Have It So Much Better' . It’s more dramatic, more emotional, more three dimensional. Not just new wave, FRANZ offer a new world: rock music with style, sexual intrigue, smarts, and more plenty of room for dancing. They’ve conquered the world – what chance does the BIG DAY OUT stand?
A little Southern charm will go a long way when KINGS OF LEON charm the pants right off the BIG DAY OUT. The Followill boys (three brothers and one cousin) burst outta Nashville in 2003 with 'Youth and Young Manhood', a butt-kicking debut of garage rock, boozy blues, rootsy riffs and a dash of country. Soon the uber-cool foursome were gracing the covers of rock mags across the globe, and gracing the 2004 BIG DAY OUT stage. From the first album’s primal rock, KOL leapt into darker, more emotional territory with last year’s 'Aha Shake Heartbreak'. The tales are still twisted, Caleb still howls like a man possessed, but this is an altogether different trip. A band with a rock show good enough to break and shake your heart, please welcome back KINGS OF LEON.
No strangers to the BIG DAY OUT, we are delighted to herald the return of THE MARS VOLTA in 2006 . Led by former At the Drive-In vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, THE MARS VOLTA have taken music to new frontiers over two mind-blowing concept albums, 'De-Loused In The Comatorium' and 'Frances The Mute'. Beyond genres, they blend sci-fi, primal punk, electronic pulses, hair-raising vocals, Latin grooves and classic rock with a charisma and conviction you can’t tear your eyes or ears away from. More than just a live show, THE MARS VOLTA are an experience.
Pull out your eyeliner: the BIG DAY OUT gets dark in 2006 by welcoming A Fire Inside, better known simply as AFI. The decade-old and counting Californian hardcore boys are what frontman Davey Havok calls a “risky” proposition: hard as hell one minute, infectiously melodic the next. But the risk has paid off – AFI’s bond with their audience is like nothing you’ve ever seen at a rock show. With an epic follow up to 2003’s major label debut 'Sing The Sorrow' due in the new year, AFI will sing it and mean it at the BIG DAY OUT this summer.
Portland, Oregon’s original riot grrrls SLEATER-KINNEY bring their feminine wiles to BIG DAY OUT. Over 11 years and seven albums, Carrie, Corin and Janet have been producing visceral anthems of provocative, urbane, enraged, noisy, politically-charged, funky, angular punk rock. Their latest, the Dave Fridmann-produced 'The Woods', is their most challenging effort yet, taking the trio into panoramic new territory. Always a formidable live force, SLEATER-KINNEY are a band we’re proud to welcome to the BIG DAY OUT.
Indie kids and pop lovers rejoice! Those well-travelled London purveyors of magnificent melodies, THE MAGIC NUMBERS will put a smile on the dial of all those lucky enough to witness their BIG DAY OUT debut. The unusual four-piece combo of brother and sister Romeo and Michele Stodart and brother and sister Sean and Angela Gannon, THE MAGIC NUMBERS’ self-titled debut album is all country soul, West Coast harmonies and melancholic joy. As a live act, they’ve got a reputation for inspiring awed silence, squeals of joy, and Cheshire cat grins. Winter is over and THE MAGIC NUMBERS’ unique brand of musical sunshine is headed your way.
Fronted by Belgian brothers Stephen and David Dewaele, SOULWAX are a rock band with a difference – they can rock a mosh-pit and a dancefloor. The band’s three albums are a swirling mass of funked-out basslines, electric psychedelics, driving guitars and leftfield loops. Last year’s album 'Any Minute Now', presided over by studio ubermensch Flood, took electro-glitz and mated it with riffed-out rock. The result? Sold out shows around the UK and a festival tour that left punters, chin-strokers and ravers gyrating uncontrollably to their own style of block rocking beats.
Alter-ego of the Belgian party-rockers SOULWAX, the DJ duo of 2MANYDJs has taken the worlds of rock, dance and urban and fused them into party music for the 20th century. Their mix album 'As Heard On Radio Soulwax Vol. 2' started out as a pure underground bootleg before the secret got out – and the world didn’t just listen – it started shaking its ass. Some labelled it mashup, some lumped it in with electroclash, but their cut’n’paste take on mixing and blending music is truly unique. Genre means nothing to this pair, who slam together the post-punk sounds of Seattle with R&B futurism, and top it off with Ennio Morricone – and the dancefloor never stops moving.
THE LIVING END were an instant hit with Australian audiences in the late 90s, and the BIG DAY OUT hails the return of one of this country’s most loved alternative punk rock/rockabilly bands. Currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album, Chris, Scott and Andy will dish out one helluva blistering set of surging rock anthems this summer when they play the BIG DAY OUT.
Sydney trio GERLING made a name for themselves remapping the geography of Australian music by going wherever the hell they wanted. Established as mavericks who were willing to take risks in the recording studio, their live show translated perfectly and has always been lauded as an unpredictable must see. Don’t miss Burke, Presser and Darren, three scruffy punks daring to push the envelope of joyous and chaotic noise nationally in 2006.
With killer rhymes, irresistible beats and a wicked sense of humour, DEI HAMO has toured with some of the world’s biggest names including Busta Rhymes, The Black Eyed Peas and D12 and is considered by most to be the hottest new talent in New Zealand hip hop. DEI HAMO’s slick observational MC-ing style, equal parts inspired by his hip hop heroes Slick Rick and Rakim as well as his own Polynesian heritage, serves up a musical movie for your mind.
First and foremost a live band, FAT FREDDY’S DROP are the ultimate Pacific purveyors of hi-tek soul. Driven by the power of live performance, sheer hard work and savvy independent vinyl releases, the Wellington band’s debut studio album 'Based On A True Story' made history as the first independently distributed album to hit number one on the NZ album charts, shipping gold on day one and reaching platinum status within two weeks. With no two gigs the same, the FAT FREDDY’S DROP live show is a truly religious experience - don’t miss their hypnotic soul grooves, skanking urban Pacific roots, soul, dub and electronica.
ELEMENO P threw together equal measures of shouty punk energy and pure pop irreverence on their hugely successful debut album 'Love And Disrespect'. Anticipation is building for the release of the Auckland act’s second album 'Trouble in Paradise' later this month, recorded at Melbourne’s Sing Sing Studio with renowned US punk producer Sal Villaneuva. ELEMENO P have been busy touring throughout New Zealand and Australia and will be hitting the stage at Ericsson Stadium in 2006 with their singular style of rock-edged power pop.
With their feet in the hardcore underground and a sharp way with a shouty tune, THE BLEEDERS are back for BIG DAY OUT 2006. They’ve jumped from indie label 11:57 to Universal and just recorded their upcoming debut album in New York. With another solid year of touring and airplay success behind them, they’re keen to again take the BDO stage hostage with their impassioned style and fine rocking attitude.
He’s kept himself concealed away from the limelight for four years since the release of his chart-topping second album 'The Navigator' – now CHE FU is back with the long-awaited album 'Beneath The Radar' and he’ll be freaking the BIG DAY OUT crowds with his unconventional approach to beat-making. Cutting between live band the Krates and DJ Furious, CHE FU’s dynamic and utterly distinctive “beat-mess” makes for an exciting and fast-paced live show held together by his unstoppable showmanship. Don’t miss seeing this hip-hop innovator in the flesh.
PLUTO burst back onto the scene with a vengeance with the release of their smash second album 'Pipeline Under The Ocean' featuring the hit single 'Long White Cross'. These articulate rock n roll renegades have delivered on their early promise and shown that they have something to say. The record reflects their rapid creative growth and song-writing refined into something more intricate and compelling, while still remaining fit to burst with the band’s trademark harmonies and melodic power. One of today’s most inventive and important local bands, PLUTO have maintained their reputation as an energetic and gloriously unpredictable live band and a must-see act at the BIG DAY OUT.
FRONTLINE are two man team David Dallas (aka Con Psy) and producer 41 (Nick McLaren), and they’re masters at creating hip hop that’s a cut above the typical rap release. The rising stars in P Money’s Dirty Records label, the duo have amassed a following far beyond the norm for debuting artists through their regular live gigs and underground releases like the big-selling album 'What You Expect?' The combination of Dave’s masterful lyrical ability and 41’s superbly crafted beats makes for some of the most intelligent and vital hip hop in the land, with no room for hype or flashy gimmicks. Straight up goodness - go tell your boys!
Having impressed crowds across the States on their recent tour supporting The Shins, Auckland bubble gum popsters THE BRUNETTES will keep BDO crowds smiling with their sweet cutie-pie pop. Since the release of their latest album 'Mars Loves Venus', THE BRUNETTES’ live show has grown in stature to accommodate the ‘Lil’ Chief Pop Orchestrette’, a changing, waxing and waning crew of amateur instrumentalists associated with the band’s label Lil’ Chief Records. It’s music to hold hands to, so make sure to see THE BRUNETTES with a friend – or make some when you get there.
Stay tuned for our next announcement, when we’ll reveal the latest additions to the BDO party guestlist…
