our society in the Tectonic series, a final performance of The
Americas series, and Toru
Wha, Ka Rewa a Matariki as part of Chamber Music New Zealand’s Matariki celebrations.
The Tectonic series, which this year will include performances at the Auckland Art Gallery, focuses on immigration and the colonisation of Aotearoa. Each concert charts a musical course from Captain Cook’s homeland, to the
sounds of Aotearoa prior to his arrival on these shores. The programme examines the journey of the European genre of piano trio music as it has developed within Aotearoa’s unique culturally intertwined society and as it compares with the result of
development in a British environment. NZTrio then turns its searchlight to Cold War Superpowers and the struggle for supremacy with towering masterpieces from the USA and Russia/USSR as they loom menacingly in an icy standoff.
Joining in Chamber Music New Zealand’s Matariki celebrations, NZTrio bring Toru Wha, Ka Rewa a Matariki, remembering the past and what has been, while also celebrating new horizons and
possibilities with these free concerts. The trio will be joined by musician and composer Horomona Horo playing taonga pūoro for these performances. Illustrated by the combination of instrumentation, composers, performers, music and culture
this programme invites discussion and contemplation of the first encounters between Maori and European, and the resulting effects on our culture, and the significance of Matariki in Aotearoa today. Each piece tells a distinct tale or legend that links
with Matariki, and includes three newly commissioned pieces, from Dame Gillian Karawe Whitehead (Ngai Tahu), Martin Lodge and Jeremy Mayall, alongside works composed by Victoria Kelly, Richard Nunns and Gareth Farr.
NZTrio’s The Americas series will also make one last appearance at the Leigh Sawmill Café in June with an upbeat set of energetic works from the USA and South America, featuring guest performers Andrew Beer (violin) and Stephen De Pledge (piano) alongside NZTrio member
