The Motherland Collective is please to announce that veteran Jamaican deejay Big Youth, with DJ Earl (Trojan Soundsystem) at the controls, is the first international act to be confirmed for the SoundSplash Festival 2006 at Raglan's Wainui Reserve on Waitangi weekend.
Kingston-based Big Youth - real name Manley Augustus Buchanan - has been toasting on reggae sound systems for more than 30 years, & is widely credited with being one of the first deejays to bring Rastafarian culture into the island nation's music. In his home country only the great Bob Marley rivalled him in terms of popularity among followers of reggae music.
Through his initial work with the Tippertone Sound System & a string of hits in Jamaica including Hit the Road Jack and S-90 Skank, Big Youth took deejay lyricism to a higher & more conscious level, & remains one of the most respected artists of his generation. He was one of the first Jamaican performers to openly sport dreadlocks, & is easily recognizable due to his remarkable teeth, which are encrusted with red, gold and green jewels, the colours of Rastafarianism.
This will be the first visit to New Zealand by the 50-year-old musical sensation.
Big Youth and DJ Earl will join a select group of New Zealand performers already confirmed for SoundSplash 06 -
