Big Day Out 2006 2nd Annoucement!

16 November 2005 - 2 Comments

BIG DAY OUT ANNOUNCES SECOND ADDITIONS FOR A SUPERSIZED, STAR-SPANGLED SUMMER FESTIVAL

Since the first announcement of stellar artists performing at this year’s BIG DAY OUT, tickets have been snapped up at record speed. Below you’ll find the next round of international acts as well as local stars who will take to the stage at the Auckland BIG DAY OUT, January 20th 2006.

BIG DAY OUT-ers beware! 2006 heralds the return of the fantastically frightening MUDVAYNE (USA). The Illinois metal crew are renowned for their visceral, unrelenting, and inventive sound, and on their fourth album Lost and Found, this sound is coming through clearer than ever – no make-up required. They’ve sold over two million albums worldwide, without ever compromising. This is why the hardcore metal kids love them, and this is why you should expect nothing less than MUDVAYNE pounding their sound into submission at the BIG DAY OUT this summer.

Hard rockers SHIHAD have returned to their roots and are back in black, ready to RAWK! The band that produced the classic speed metal albums, 1993's Churn and 1995's hugely successful Killjoy and more, SHIHAD took a detour in the form of PACIFIER to produce General Electric but are back as SHIHAD and turned up to eleven with their sixth studio album Love is the New Hate. Never straying away from the stage for too long, SHIHAD’s live shows have become legendary, renowned for their frenetic energy, vitriol, guts and guile. If you missed SHIHAD on their "The Homeland Security Tour”, don’t miss them tear through their fast and furious set at the BIG DAY OUT this summer!

The word “legend” gets thrown around a lot in hip hop circles, but it’s a term that genuinely applies to Philadelphia’s COMMON (USA) – and then some. The MC ranks alongside with Jay-Z, Nas and and Notorious BIG as one of the greatest lyricists to emerge out of the 1990s. In more than 14 years of recording and performing, COMMON has weaved hip hop in and out of poetry, social commentary, jazz and straight-up head-nodding beats. Earlier this year COMMON released the Kanye West produced album Be to rave reviews and eager fans. And on stage, COMMON gets the hands in the air and move the feet – and he also moves minds and souls.

When UK artist MYLO dropped the album Destroy Rock’n’Roll in 2004, it made dance music fans take a step back – then another forward to the dancefloor as they got swept up in MYLO’s infectious grooves. His track Drop the Pressure was nothing less than an anthem, encapsulating the 21st century electronic melee of disco, electro and house. But MYLO isn’t just a knob-twiddling producer – he takes a full band on the road that can turn any shuffling crowd into a seething mass of energy.

THE GO! TEAM (UK) are one of those musical miracles that come along just once in a lifetime: four drummers, a bass and an MC. That doesn’t quite work, right? Wrong. Taking messed up samples, drums, deft lyrical skills and an array of instruments that goes from banjo to melodica, THE GO! TEAM make an aural cacophony that makes Bollywood soundtracks seem mundane and the most rocking hip hop breaks sound like a slow waltz. The band has taken the world by force in less than a year, prompting crowds to alternate between scratching their heads and jumping up and down in sheer delight. Can’t decide if you prefer Sonic Youth or Afrika Bambaataa? Pick THE GO! TEAM.

Erskineville kings WOLFMOTHER have just released their highly anticipated self titled debut album – it comes as the follow up to their hotter than hot self titled EP that featured the killer tracks ‘Woman’, ‘Dimension’ and ‘Apple Tree’ that set them on a path to rock superstardom both in Oz and abroad. Channelling the Sabbath (but much less wasted) and various other 70s influences (take it or leave it) WOLFMOTHER make monster psych rock for the masses. If you like to keep your rock’n’roll exciting, make sure you see WOLFMOTHER at the BIG DAY OUT as they go hell for leather and take you on one cosmic rock’n’roll journey.

Currently busy recording their second album, heavy duty metallers BLINDSPOTT return to Big Day Out in 2006. Following the huge success of their debut eponymously titled album - shipped gold and debuted at number one, achieved platinum status in its first week and currently at triple platinum sales – there’s much anticipation building for album number two. If you like your music real, emotive, loud, and above all, honest – don’t miss the explosive BLINDSPOTT live experience.

BIG DAY OUT is officially a family affair. Joining the brother/sister combo Magic Numbers on the bill are fellow Brits THE SUBWAYS (UK). Made up of singer Billy Lunn, his drumming brother Josh Morgan and Billy’s ladyfriend Mary-Charlotte Cooper on bass, THE SUBWAYS are a teen dream rapidly mutating into a rock heavyweight. On their debut album Young For Eternity, they’re an energetic, songwriting tour-de-force. Live, they’re a hybrid of punk, fuzzy rock and chaotic soul, making a monster sound well beyond their years. Young, fun, and set to stun, we’re tipping THE SUBWAYS as a band set to break big on BIG DAY OUT in 2006.

For sheer musical exhilaration, SHAPESHIFTER are second to none. With a reputation as pioneers of modern music built on a unique approach to electronic music, the boys from Christchurch are renowned for creating live what had previously been restricted to computer-based studios. Genre definitions are transcended with a pick’n’mix of elements from jazz, latin, reggae, soul, rock, hip hop and electronica, blended into a truly diverse and overwhelming dancefloor experience – quite simply, you must see this band live! Five sell-out New Zealand tours and regular performances in Australia and now Europe can’t be wrong.

He’s a veteran of several BIG DAY OUTs, and DJ SIR-VERE returns once more for 2006 to bring you the cutting edge of international hip hop. From humble beginnings as a mobile disc jockey at the age of 15, SIR-VERE has become one of the leading and most respected djs in New Zealand’s hip hop community, and he’s not satisfied with constant dj work – SIR-VERE is also responsible for running the NZ branch of the ITF competition and promoting touring international djs. He’s a permanent fixture on Mai FM and his Major Flavours albums have been massive hits, leading to other mixes including Mai FM’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ release.

BAITERCELL & SCHUMACHER are back for BIG DAY OUT 2006 and they’ll take great pleasure in smashing the boiler-room to pieces with their distinctive brand of drum n bass and hip-hop infused breaks. The duo have been prominent on the breaks scene for a few years now with numerous b-net hits and a healthy output of remix efforts ranging from Supergroove to Katchafire, as well as winning a swag of nominations and awards. B & S’ latest album The Wall of Bass Technique hit number one on the independent chart earlier this year and the pair were recently added to the roster of UK label Resin Records.

Two acronyms have shaped underground electronic music for the past few years: LCD Soundsystem and DFA. Behind them both is DJ JAMES MURPHY (USA), a producer DJ and musician who is the godfather of punk-funk, the ruler of dancefloors around the world, whether you’re a skinny punker from Brooklyn or a high-heeled clubber in Auckland. A veteran of punk, rock and disco, Murphy’s beats and riffs will chain you to the dancefloor. The question is: will you be able to stop dancing?

New kids on the block END OF FASHION will step up for the BIG DAY OUT in 2006, bringing along their anthemic, catchy brand of pop-rock. Their stick-in-your-head choruses and punchy, unforgettable tunes make this awesome Perth foursome one hell of an item. Justin, Rodney, Nick and Tom will thrill BIG DAY OUT audiences with their timeless get-go rock’n’roll that will make you want to join in, sing along, shake it down – O Yeah!

Originally a UK-based kiwi electronic duo consisting of Radio One and MTV DJ Zane Lowe and Hamish Clark, BREAKS CO-OP have evolved with the release of their double platinum second album, The Sound Inside. With its own hybrid genre-crossing style making for stunning results, the band's sound is as diverse and tasty as its record collection which stretches from DJ Shadow to Crosby, Stills & Nash, and led by the soulful voice of singer Andy Lovegrove, single ‘The Otherside’ was Single of the Year at the NZ Music Awards. The BREAKS CO-OP live band features Andy and Hamish, plus the brilliant musicianship of Goodshirt’s Rodney Fisher, Trinity Rootsman Rio Hemopo and drummer Tom Atkinson of SJD and One Million Dollars.

If you took The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds and forced it to breed with a copy of Beastie Boys’ Paul’s Boutique, you’d end up with Boston rapper EDAN (USA). More than merely an MC, EDAN is a producer, DJ and artist of sounds that turn hip hop into a psychedelic landscape that pushes the boundaries of beats and rhymes. This year’s Beauty and the Beat was revered by rap fans wanting something more of music than bling and BS, as well as rock fans who saw EDAN as Syd Barrett with a sampler. EDAN doesn’t just keep it real, he keeps it surreal.

In a world where bling and booty are part of the rap-pop bandwagon, JEAN GRAE (USA) throws a well-deserved spanner in the works. The New York-based MC takes to the female rap stereotype with a hammer, knocking it out with smooth rhymes and a soulful conscience. Born in South Africa at the height of the 1976 Soweto riots, it’s as though JEAN GRAE absorbed the political tension around her and took it as her birthright. And you can hear it in her 10 years of recording with everyone from The Roots to Talib Kweli and the unstoppable presence she has on stage.

From Cincinnati to BIG DAY OUT come THE GREENHORNES (USA), an authentic rock’n’roll trio with harmonies that drip honey, psychedelic leanings to sweep you off your feet and a stomping good dose of garage rockin’ blues. No strangers to the big stages – 2005 has seen the threesome criss-cross North America with good mates The White Stripes – THE GREENHORNES have also mixed it with the big names, recording with the likes of Brendan Benson, Loretta Lynn and Jack White himself. But with their strong tunes and updated take on the classic sounds of the ‘60s, it won’t take long for THE GREENHORNES to carve their own name in the sand of this Australasian summer.

Although THE SNEAKS prefer to call themselves X-ray Ninja enthusiasts, they’ve been called the most exciting new band in New Zealand and they’ve got the ‘Most Promising New Act’ gong from this year’s bNet Awards to prove it. Having carved out a strong presence in Auckland with their unique live shows, distinctive stage presence and downright infectious indie pop tunes, THE SNEAKS take their place in the BIG DAY OUT lineup for the first time in 2006. Listing their influences as Prince, Fugazi, Pavement, Africa 70 and the 1910 Fruitgum Company (with some idle cheerleader zombie daydreaming), THE SNEAKS are chaotic noise but they’re also more hooks per minute than most achieve in a lifetime.

Underground heavyweights KITSCH have been around for a decade now and have just released their third album The Burning Ground on Auckland’s stalwart indie 1157 Records. The album was produced by the band with long-term collaborator and bassist Evan Short, notorious for his work as one half of the drum’n’bass colossus that is Concord Dawn. Having played the Warped Tour and shared the stage with more legends than you could tattoo on a hardcore kid’s arms and neck, these guys play some of the most highly emotive, amped to eleven punk rock in this corner of the world.

First appearing in the early 80s as a spinoff to classic Flying Nun band the Clean, THE BATS are bringing it to BIG DAY OUT to show the kids how it’s done. Their jangle-pop sound ranges from light, diaphanous guitar-based psychedelia through to rousing, bittersweet hymns, from melancholy chorales for the disenfranchised to electric sea shanties full of foreboding, from upbeat amplified folk music for belligerent morris dancers to light “progressive rock”. They’ve continually breathed new life into their repertoire, most recently with their first album in ten years, At The National Grid.

Dubbedy dub dub stars back from a tour of outer space with a fusion of styles as diverse as the collective themselves, RHOMBUS have just released their second album Future Reference, a beautifully crafted immersion of harmony, bass and beats. The RHOMBUS live show is a feast of sounds and visuals with the ever-expanding collective featuring a live band that punches out the bouncing RHOMBUS grooves under the madhatter science espoused by the group’s talented MCs led by microphone master Imon Star.

GESTALT SWITCH is a child of the Dunedin night, of distorted, metallic longing; they’re also four bored losers with a talent for playing music and some difficulty making friends. With songs ranging from near-apocalyptic metal to paranoid, psychedelic soundscapes right through to the sweet sounds of 80s indie rock, GESTALT SWITCH favour a twin guitar attack not unlike Television via the Cars, coupled with a rhythm section comparable to a metronomic drill. Their powerful live shows have been compared to early Jane’s Addiction and the Pixies – make up your own mind at Big Day Out 2006!

Taking their lead from the likes of Eminem, the Beastie Boys and the BEP, the FAST CREW’s sparkling debut album Set The Record Straight is an eclectic mix of hip hop, pop, funk, underground styles and MC–ing. For infectious rhymes and sing-a-long choruses catch the FAST CREW at the BIG DAY OUT 2006.

One of Australia’s busiest DJs KID KENOBI has long been hailed King o’ the breaks and has become renowned for knockin’ your socks off sideways with his skills on the decks. Also spanning hip hop, breakbeat, tech-breaks to chill-out and nu jazz KID KENOBI has won acclaim from both industry and fans and has been voted Australian DJ of the year numerous times. Through the Ministry Of Sound label he has released three signature albums Breaks 03 The Album - Mixed by Kid Kenobi, Clubbers’ Guide To Breaks Vol.2 Mixed by Kid Kenobi feat. MC Shureshock and MOS - Clubbers Guide to Breaks. Shimmy over to the Boiler Room at the BDO to catch the formidable team of KID KENOBI and MC SHURESHOCK as they fill the dancefloor with their fun-tastic breaks and MC-ing this summer.

The new acts above join the already announced

THE WHITE STRIPES, IGGY & THE STOOGES, FRANZ FERDINAND, KINGS OF LEON, THE MARS VOLTA, AFI, SLEATER-KINNEY, SOULWAX, 2MANYDJs, FAT FREDDY’S DROP, ELEMENO P, BLEEDERS, CHE FU AND THE KRATES, PLUTO, FRONTLINE, THE BRUNETTES, THE LIVING END, GERLING, DEI HAMO
