Iconic Kiwi drum and bass act Concord Dawn is 20, and the original line up of Evan Short (Kiljoy) and Matt Harvey (Matty C) are celebrating on the eve their 20th anniversary tour with a the news that they'll be releasing a four-track EP titled 1999 next month on Klute’s label, Commercial Suicide. They've also added a couple of new tour dates as the anniversary tour edges closer to sold-out status.
Since forming in 1999, Concord Dawn quickly moved from being an underground act to an international music export, with their biggest track Morning Light remaining one of the most memorable local electronic tracks of the early 2000's. They often split off while touring to cover the most countries possible, with Matt taking over sole touring duties since 2008 when Evan left the group. Now, sharing the stage for the first time in over a decade, they're looking forward to kicking off the tour tomorrow night with an appearance at Ohakune Mardi Gras.
"We cant wait to get back out on the road together. When things took off we often toured separately so its been ages since we got to elbow each other out of the way and chuck on a tune," Matt says.
"Making music together again has been surprisingly easy despite having to navigate around Rarotongan internet and two hectic lives, and we might squeeze out a few more while Evan is down in New Zealand for the tour. I'm looking forward to dropping the new tracks at these shows."
"1999 is about returning to drum and bass that is hypnotic and entrancing, music that draws you in and compels you to listen rather than shouting for your attention," says Evan.
"It draws on techno and trance influences of repetition and evolution, which hearkens back to the kind of stuff we made on the first few albums before we became perhaps a bit more “song” focused. When Matt was over in Rarotonga last year we talked about the nature of ostinato and repetition in music and how that was missing from newer drum and bass, and so we decided to make something along those lines."
1999 is out on 22 July via Commercial Suicide.
