Skux returns with new single 'Kudis' and announces EP

19 July 2019 - 0 Comments

Following the chart-topping success of On Her Way from double A-side single The Two Sides of She in 2016 and adopting a punk-rock/park-ranger lifestyle in Alaska away from home, Skux returns with a new single and announces her debut EP Kudis due August 23rd.

Kudis is a public service announcement to wake up, don’t just make noise, action your concerns and conquer your goals. Don’t take yourself too seriously or those kudis will find you. The five-track EP explores several different genres of punk including the heavy stuff and nostalgic nods to the punk-rock era. Kudis is about expressing angst, love, carving your own path and defeating those dang kudis who’ve created an epidemic of haters that infect our minds and the world. Join Skux in the battle against kudis.

The title track, Kudis, is available everywhere today with fun, infectious (in a good way) colourful visuals! Before you go to your next gig, warm up with this punk rock aerobics video and shake off those kudis!

Lead singer, songwriter, and now, punk-rock park ranger, Ayisha Jaffer spits some wisdom based on her latest single Kudis: “I wanted to make something fun and relatable that all humans can enjoy. Kudis are a representation of literally anything you can think of that is infecting the masses or even you personally. It could be propaganda, fear, bad vibes, a toxic relationship, your own anxieties, or even a representation of literal epidemic outbreaks from mental health to the measles. This song highlights the infection you have, pokes fun at the hysteria it causes, and asks people to see how silly it is to sit and fret over these Kudis and actually get up and take some action against it for a better life and an enhanced, 3D round earth.

Skux is the alter ego of Ayisha Jaffer in her emerging project that was spawned musically from a love of punk and a life-long admiration of the riot girl movement. With material co-written with Dan Walker of The Death Set, Jaffer performs live with her band between New Zealand, New York, and everywhere in between. Current location: Alaska.

Skux’s debut release came in the form of a two-track, double A-side single titled The Two Sides of She which premiered worldwide last year on Vice/Noisey and was an instant hit in New Zealand with On Her Way peaking at #1 on the official Radioscope Alt Charts for several weeks. Upon release, the track featured on Spotify playlists; New Music Friday, Weekend Buzz and Fresh Finds alongside features on Vice, IndieShuffle, Undertheradar, Impose and more.

The Indian, female-fronted punk rock outfit is a collaborative collective reaching across the aisle to other genres and mediums keeping the ethos of punk intact, working with the likes of French Horn Rebellion for remixing projects and opening for artists such as The Coathangers. Skux has already mustered a keen cult following having performed at notable venues and festivals around Aotearoa: A Gathering in the Forest (Whanganui), Future City Festival (Hamilton), headlining Cassette Store Day at a Vice NZ party and many shows at Auckland’s favoured venues Whammy and Wine Cellar. As Jaffer has a history of industry experience, she aims to promote realised independence and relatability through her music, helping people leave their houses and get up out of bed, one human at a time.
